Complete noob questions here but I searched and could only find some hard to understand technical info.


Ok so me and a friend were talking last time we boiled and well since I have no idea since this was my first year making syrup, I need a lamens definition of what is niter, what makes it form, whats in it, and how can such nasty grit form out of such a wonderful product?

and is my friend REALLY wierd for actually seeming to like the taste of it:razz:

Dont get me wrong after about 8 beers I tasted it too, reminded me of nasty tasting peanut butter mixed with very gritty sugar. Needless to say I stopped after the first taste.......my friend....well.....we wont go there:lol: :confused:

Nitre or sugar sand is the combination of minerals etc that are suspended in the sap. As the water is evaporated off the denser sap/syrup can't hold these particles in suspension and they separate out.
