Surge SP 11 or a BB2

A minimun of 1 CFM per 100 taps. And it needs to be at the "of Hg. you plan on running at. Many pumps are rated at open flow (0"Hg) so you need to make sure it is big enough
With only 150 taps it certainly doesn't need to be a big pump

I have approx 22-23 inches and the clear hose I'm using is collapsing....Would anyone on here have a recommendation for vacuum hose from my pump to the releaser?? I would use 5/8 ID.

Use the wire spun type or the thick white at HD you can drive over it with a tank and it wont squash.

A Delaval 73 or any small rotary vein pump in the 5 cfm range will work fine for 150 taps if you can't find a Surge BB2 or SP11.

I'm using 1.25" black water pipe from my pump to my releaser and am running up to 24" of vacuum without a problem.

My neighbor runs 26" on black water pipe, probably just the 100 psi that most of us are using, without collapse.

I'd suggest you look into a Gast dry rotary vane pump in the 0823 or 1023 series. I had nearly 400 taps on one of the 1023 and it was holding 22". I expanded to about 600 taps and 3 releasers and the pressure dropped ( tree rats ) and today its up near 17 - 18". I'll be getting a second one off Ebay delivered tomorrow. You can get them for $200 - $ 250. They're small, and lightweight and can run 24 / 7. In bad weather just cover them with a wheelbarrow (propped up so they can breath and stay cool.

Haynes uses these as well

Thanks for the responses about vacuum hose. We had considered black poly as one option--this cinches it.

They're 1/2 and 3/4 Hp.
check them out at www.gastmfg.com
go to the literature page for rotary vane pumps

Is this the same model mentioned above?

Pump at Grainger (http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/4F742?cm_mmc=Google%20Base-_-Pneumatics-_-Air%20Compressors%20and%20Vacuum%20Pumps-_-4F742)

I have about 250 taps that I'll be putting on vacuum this year and this sounds like an ideal solution (an a good price!). I just didn't see where I connect my line to. I have a line that I'll connect to a releaser in my woods where my mainlines all lead to.

That is one of the pumps mentioned. The two ports in the top. One is a goes in the other a goes out. A small glass jar assembly with a filter attaches to it. Watch Ebay, you can get them much cheaper.

Like this one?

Pump on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/GAST-MFG-INC-1023-101Q-G608EX-VACUUM-PUMP-HP-MOTOR_W0QQitemZ360252256512QQcmdZViewItemQQptZBI_P umps?hash=item53e0b53100)

So I guess I can plug a muffler exhaust on the output and make a connection between the pump and my vacuum line? Looks like I'd need several fittings to connect to a 3/4" tube. I'm not sure what the glass jar assembly does, but again, I'm new to vacuum.

Thanks!

Dave

DaveB, when and if you buy the Gast pump the glass jar W/muffler inside will come in the box (should anyway). Every Gast pump I have purchased for the company I work for comes with the assembly and operating instructions included. No problem..your headed in the right direction. The motor has the option of running on 115 or 230v. Generally the motor comes set up as 115v on a 3/4 hp.

If I were you I would shop around more online if you plan to Visa Card the purchase. Try E-Bay, McMastercarr Supply, MSC Industrial or even Haynes!:)

ps: don't know about that funky white muffler...looks after market. Should be glass so you can see if any moisture has passed through your pump.

I just picked up a SP11. I paid $50, and thought it was a really good deal. It seems to be in very good shape. I don't know much about vacuum pumps. The farmer told me that it hasn't been run in 25 years. I cleaned it up and drained the oil. It did not come with a motor. I have a few questions.
1) What kind of oil should I use, and where can I get it from? The local Fleet Farm carries vacuum pump oil, but do I have to have a special oil for piston pumps?
2) The pump turns over by hand and creates vacuum. Do you think it should be taken apart to look at (because it hasn't been run in 25 years)?
3) Can I still buy parts for an SP11, and where can I find them?
4) What size electric motor should I have, and how many RPM's? What size pulley should be on the motor, and how many RPM's should the pump be run at?

In the woods,
I have one just like it. Got it at a garage sale for $75 with motor, tank, etc. I drained the old oil and used vacuum pump oil from our local Fleet-Farm supply store. I must have put 75 hours on it this year with a 3 1/2 HP gas engine, and about the same last year with the electric motor. No regulator. It made 22 inches HG on 200 taps without a problem. Occassionally had 24-25 inches, but I would slow the engine down to reduce heating. The problem will come with speed. I had a fairly tight system and could idle the gas engine down to maintain 22 inches, so kept the heat to a minimum. I used the Patented Parker "spit-sizzle" test on the dome on top of the units' cylinders.

It came with a 3/4 HP electric motor with about a 3 inch pulley on the motor. It would turn the pump shaft at 528 RPM. EXCELLANT UNIT!!

Run Motor oil in it-it's a crankcase that needs lubrication- nothing more. I wouldnt pull it apart to look at it- you cant get parts and you dont want to mess up a gasket or anything else. If it pulls vac turned by hand, it's probably good to go- these things are indestructable! Run it a bit with diesel in it to flush it out though. You can probably run this with as small as a 1hp electric motor, although I'm not 100% on that as I have an SP22 with a 5 hp gas setup. I think the original factory specs for these were around 450 rpm's which should put you in the neighborhood of a 3 1/2 inch pulley on the motor. Dont go bigger, the motor probably wont turn it if you gear it up. Thats a steal!! You can run 22" all year long with no worries. I was pulling 25" at the pump and 23" 1500 feet away with my SP22 on a really tight system.
