I just had an inquiry about processing some sap with my RO. Not sure if I will or won't but was wondering what kind of price I should ask and any drawbacks or benefits anyone may have encountered? Thanks

I just worked out what it cost per gallon of syrup to replace our old membrane - about $0.38/gallon syrup so say that was $0.01 per gallon of sap. Add in electricity, pre-filters, wear and tear on the machine and something for your time and you're at a minimum of $0.05/gallon sap.

If I paid that much for a machine, I wouldn't process 1,000 gallon of sap to 20 gallons of near syrup for $ 50. I would charge at least $ 100 or more.

I keep 1/3 of the sap I run through it.

One concern would be the quality of the sap. What you put through it you know, what someone brings you, you don't. It is an expensive piece of equipment to take chances with
As long as you can trust the one bringing you the sap I wouldn't do it.

Anyone know of a traveling RO guy that shows up with one in a trailer and processes your sap on site? Sure would like to hire someone like that right now..... The sap is pouring in but it's only at 1.5%....

we pay 10 cent per gallon approx. its definately worth it saves us 2 chord of wood on 1000 gallons of sap and all the time. i would charge at least 10 cents

There is a guy up north here in VT that travels from orchard to orchard with the complete set-up. Arch/evaporator/RO and all w/tractor trailer. Maybe related to the Leader guys in Swanton.VT. My father was hearing that from the grain truck driver just the other day. I will investigate further unless one of my fellow VT'ers knows for sure.

I'm assuming that is .10 per gal of raw sap not concentrated?

farmall h, please let me know what you find out, I would be interested in concentrating this 1.5% sap this year until I make some changes for next year!
