Could anyone give me in put on how many taps a 2x5 can handle and what the evaporation rate would be with air injection from the back? Just picked it up today from NH and gonna get it set up tomorrow have 150 gallons of sap to boil of now. Ran really good today for me. thanks for the in put ahead of time. cpmaple

To answer your question we would need to know if your rig has flues, how many, how long and how deep. That information will give you a base rate and from there you can throw in an adjustment for the forced air.

OK your all flat so you have ten square feet of surface area. The traditional rate is 0.64 gph. per sq. ft. so you can expect 6.4 gallons of evaporation per hour with perhaps 7.0 with the blower. You should be able to do 30 to 45 taps with that and a nine hour boiling day. Of course the weather and your specific conditions will make a mockery of any such estimates. Enjoy your new rig.

the gentlemen i purchased it from today told me he was get 20 gph on it last year maybe i was mislead i was looking to upgrade from last years 2x3 hobby evaporator maybe i didnt do so. that will stink. Have out 100 to 150 taps. Sounds like alot of work ahead of me.

You might get 15 avg. with 10 low and 20 high, i was getting 10gph on my homebuilt oil barrel arch with a 30"x 36" pan, Now i am getting roughly 45 avg. on my 2x6. Keep the fire box full of good wood and you will see when you start boiling, keep being optomistic.

Well here is hoping he is right and I'm just blowing smoke.
Maybe it has one jewel of a blower on it and makes the old rules obsolete.

Was that with or without a blower?

I used to get as high as 30 gph on a cinderblock arch with no grates and the fire laying on the ground many years ago on a 3x6 flat stainless pan.

I had a 27"x40" flat pan barrel evaporator with a blower I could get 15 gph out of with a little attention, you are 25% bigger surface area and a more efficient shape so I don't think 20 gph is out of the question. I ran 120 taps on that for a few years, lots of work but it did it. I think it has a lot to do wit how often you boil and for how long. I used to start it at 3:00 in the afternoon and run until 8:00 at night. I could boil twice as much from 9:00 saturday until 5:00 because of startup and shutdowns. I know a fellow that runs a 2x6 with 500+ taps. He is retired and married to the evaporator when sap is running, he enjoys it or he wouldn't do it. He also doesn't sell it, just gives it away to whoever he feels like.

I am running 625 taps on a 2x8 and I don't usually boil more than 2 to 3 times on a busy week.

i get a pretty consistant 15 with my 2x6 flat pan sometimes 20 if i get some good coals in there. so your prolly looking at 10-12 if your burning dry wood with a blower.
