what has everyone been getting for sugar content. mine has been pretty low so far. im only getting like 1.75

mine's been averaging around 2.25%..until today that is..checked an overflowing bucket and it didn't register...go figure:o

my sugars have been averaging 3+ and reds are 1.5-1.75 ( I have alot more reds than sugars so combined it is around 2 %

I tap all reds and typically don't get above 1.75. So far this year with 300 gallons, the average ahs been 1.65. Sure wish I had some sugars around here!

You got sap? I can't even float the hydrometer yet, although Wildacres says I've got the unit upside down. But tell us, how did you go from 100 taps on a pan to 2000 with an RO??? That is a rocket ride you need to share! Bruce

I am getting 2-2.5 with my reds and 2.7-3.0 with my sugars.
Got a decent run today even though it barely broke 32F - must have been the fairly warm overnight temps.

invested lots of time and money into it this year. plus theres five of us which helps. havent had much for jobs lately so weve been putting around the woods all year.

most of the taps are in new woods that really need thining, so they dont have much for crowns. do you think that could be part of the reason its low?

I got sick of it and tested the sugar today. 1.75 out of roadside trees, I guess some water got in the tanks. Still no draw off.

I've been testing at 1.6%. I have all woods trees. 75/25 split of sugar/reds. I think you're in the same boat as me. Last year I started at 1.8%...I'm hoping this year isn't going to be worse than last.

The batch was 100% sugars from Lee, that usually test in the 2.75 range.
I think I'm going to carry the hydro with me as I collect this weekend, I don't want diluted sap. Its pretty warm out this morning, I wonder how its going to run, 38degs on the way in. But rainy, had to climb up on the roof to close the stack cover.

I haven't had that great of sugar content either. 1.9 was my best so far. All sugars. Last year was the same thing. Made 15 gallons so far

I thought I was getting a whopping 4%, but then I realized I was using a Fahrenheit measurement in a Celsius conversion formula....

2.8% in the tank right now. All sugars as far as I can tell.

I don't keep records like yours, so I could just sit back and think man I'm boiling wicked sweet sap. Last night knowing how low it was, made the time crawl even slower.

this makes me feel a lil better knowing its not just me with low sugar. Having the RO definately is helping, otherwise i would have to burn way to long to get a gallon.

Sowly creeping up a tenth every day. Started at 1.8 and Saturday 1.9 sunday was 2.0 no run today. Hopefully I get back up to 3 here soon. Either way I will take what I can get.

THIS MAY BE A DUMB QUESTION BUT HOW DO YOU TEST SUGAR IN THE SAP, SOMETHING ELSE I NEED TO BUY LOL, IVE ALWAYS JUST BOILED UP WHAT I HAVE NEVER TESTED IT, SO WHAT WILL TEST THE SUGAR IN THE SAP, DO YOU DO THIS COLD, I HAVE NO IDEA, THANKS JIM

Thinning makes all the diffrance in the world,,at Rte.11 where we logged 5 years ago we are getting 2.7%,,,,,the sugar content was 1.4% there the first year and has been climbing every year,,,,,how many gallons have you made and what is yor grade?

I started thinning a little last year removing dead standing trees I think there are only a few left. I am doing it my self so it will take longer. as soon as this season is done I need to get in the woods and start cutting before the leaves come. and once things dry out I need to put in a road and a bridge over the brook so it is easier to get the wood out. I plan on thinning a little each year!!! I'll get there!!! and get that sugar up there!!!

Buy a sap hyrometer, identical to one for syrup but it's made for sap and has different scale. Most are calibrated for something like 38°.

Having trouble finding a temperature correction chart for a sap hydrometer. Any suggestions on where to find a copy? I just bought one to start tracking sugar content per tree and per season and right now I'm trying to warm or cool the sap to get the 38 degree reading correct (what a pain that is).
