no way for me . its a high of no higher than 24 until next monday . yesterday and today are gorgeous, and im sure their would be some vacuum release in the trees to shoot out sap, but then it shuts down for a week so no go .
last year i tapped on 3-2 . . and it looks like itll be close to that this year.
good luck .

I put out my test bucket yesterday morning as it was too sunny for something not to be happening even though it is still really cold. Just over a quart ran yesterday and about a quart and a half today here in Russell. First back to back sunny days we've had in a long time. Seems promising but I agree, the temps don't look good for the next week so I am going to hold off on tapping until things crank up a notch. Pretty dogone close though. The cardinals are singing and the bluebirds are back. I wouldn't be able to get the tractor up in the woods to collect the buckets with this much snow anyway... Rob Morgan

Put out 48 taps today in Blacklick, OH (Franklin County). The sun peeked out for a couple of hours and got them running a little.
Couldn't wait any longer and tapped today in Ashtabula County. All of my smaller trees (12-18") were running pretty hard on the south and east sides. Drilled 126 taps on gravity tubing and hung 29 buckets. I did not even expect any sap, just wanted to get tapped in case the weatherman is wrong about mid week. I was surprised at how hard some of them were running. Two more days like this and I may have enough to boil.

I couldn't tap even if I wanted to. The snow is to deep for my tractor to even get close to the end of my pump line, let alone go the extra 800 yards to the woods and then have to walk around in knee deep snow.
Boy am I tired of Snow. I am sure hoping that we get some rain and it melts all this ugly white stuff. Unfortunatly they are calling for even more of it this week. :(

I know the feeling about the snow. My Mule would not get to where I tapped today without chains and 2 melting days. Now we are expecting heavy rain. It will make a mess, but it will get rid of much of the snow. Down here, we are looking at above freezing days from here out. The mid week is close (33-35), but it is way late for us to be getting started. The avg highs here are pushing 45 now. I made 30 gallons last year and had almost half of that made by now.

Close... very close. Probably will wait until next Sunday, but we'll have to see what this week brings.
Jeff,
Out of 163 taps I got about 70 gallons of sap today. The big trees are barely running but the smaller trees are running like crazy. Almost all of this sap probably came from less than a quarter of my trees. My gravity tubing is running ok, metal buckets not much at all. Drop tubes into 5 gal buckets are running real well. Hope to have enough to boil tomorrow night.

Drove past the woods today and I see alot of those stubley cornstalks sticking up. with the temp ubove 40 deg today i think we may have lost enough snow that I can get into my woods this week. Unfotunatly though they are calling for freezing rain tomorrow and that is supposed to turn to more snow tomorrow night. Just hope we loss more snow than we gain from this system.

I finally got the rest of my taps out. Down on the hillside, some of the trees have not warmed up enough, but I do have 100 gallons in the tanks after today so I will get to boil again soon! Those hillsides are going to be rough going for awhile with all the snow and rain.

Heus, that doesn't sound too bad. Unfortunately I was out of town this weekend and couldn't have tapped anyway. Maybe I can get a few in tomorrow afternoon. Give me a call when you start boiling.

This coming Sunday will be tapping day for us. I'm just hoping that the snow doesn't get much deeper before then. They are saying maybe another 5" tonight/ tomorrow.
