Hey Everyone
Does anyone know if the sap prices for the 2010 season have come out yet. I know it usually is printed in the maple digest but I haven't seen one yet this year, even though I am a member and I am supposed to recieve a copy. I have several people who are offering to sell me sap, but want to know a price, but don't know what to tell them because I want to be fair and stick with the standard pricing system. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks
Matt

Meyer,
Yes the new digest is out with the "new" prices. They are exactly the same as last year.

It all depends on the sugar %. The posted prices in the Digest are the prtices paid "by some producers" and are only a rough guide. For example 2%=$.325/gal, 2.5%=$.45/gal and 3%=$.575/gal. The chart starts at 1% up to 5.5% by .1% incriments. To show it all here one would likely need permission. Why not google "Maple Syrup Digest" and order it. Not very costly, only $6/yr US, 8/yr US dollar, Canadian orders.. Besides, they have articles of interest to producers. By the way, the sugarhouse on the current cover was owned by a friend of mine. I heard he sold the farm and is now a guide in the Adirondaks. I don't know if it will be operating in the future under new ownership.

Contact your association president if you are not getting copies of it so they can get it corrected.

There is so many people aruound here who are very protective of their maples for saw logs. Im offering 55 cents per gallon for minimum 2% sap to get some of these people to tap their trees and sell me sap. I dont have enough trees of my own to make the volume of syrup I want.

madmantr,
If you buy sap, you work out a deal with someone interested in selling sap. I purchase from several sources. I purchase all the sap from some of them and only what the others cannot boil themselves. I pay the prices that were listed in the maple syrup digest for fresh sap delivered to my sugar house. Sometimes someone comes with 50 gallons and sometimes with 1200 gallons. I keep a running tabulation of sap delivered and pay at the end of season. If someone wants cash at time of delivery, I pay slightly less. Since maple is my main source of revenue, my checking account can be getting kind of thin at this time of year.

Seclark,
Matt is on Pegg Road between Morris and New Lisbon. I am in New Lisbon on Myers Mills Road. You should do the tour of the Valley. Matt has a great operation and I am just up the road.
