Just when you thought it couldn't get any more confusing, here we go....

Now we need to differentiate between tame and wild trees??????
Free range vs. confined?
Growing vs. not?

I saw this in the local Cub Foods and laughed out loud:

I feel bad for the caged up trees. How abusive!

Those wild trees are the ones that can jump out from beside the road right into the front of your truck!:)

Man I hope they have been food grade tested!

Maybe WILD can be one of the new fruity syrup flavors?

Are these only found in Canada? Hope KenWp can give us some history on this elusive "wild" maple tree.;)

I'd worry it would taste gamey.

I think those wild trees have a bit of a "gamey"(sp?) taste. After all being wild they would tend to burn up some of the energy stored in the sugars>

Although, I saw a video on youtube that defines this family farm as producing "organic" maple syrup. I dare say I think they are in VT.

That's too funny!
I don't think this is a liberal vs. conservative thing. I think it's just marketing run amuck.

For the record, I prefer grain-fed trees.

Great to see someone drag politics into a discussion of a syrup label.

The wild tree's are very hard to chase down and get a tap in them, from what I've been told. The domesticated sugar maples come right to you when their called.

You guys have way too much time on your hands and need a lot of trees to tap and a lot of sap to boil.

man you have to win a tapping permit in a lottery too...and do not get caught tapping out of season..nothing worse than syrup poachers....

Do you traders remember the youtube video posted a few weeks ago about the crazy dude sneaking up on his trees in camo then butchering them with a big tap hole. Me thinks he must have been tapping wild trees. Everything is starting to make sense now.

This is one of the stupider things I have seen. We have to take a course now to hunt wild trees. It has things in it like proper idenification and how to tell the age and how to measure a trees to determine trophy status and which trees are males and females. Its a long course takes a couple years to take it all in and the test is severe. If you fail they take all your syrup equipment away from you.
Yes the wild trees are gamey tasting. You have to cook them with maple wood to get rid of the taste. The tame trees are way better for taste. It is also illegal to fence in wild trees and of course they don't give as much sap as tame trees do.

Fence them in! I'm going to fence them out!

Who wants these things messing up the bloodlines (saplines?) of my herd?

Plus they can be unpredictable and dangerous, I've heard tell.

Im thinkin its like the mad cow problem. Remember when they were feeding cow by product back to the cows in their feed? Well what do you think happens when you produce Maple syrup over a wood fired arch using dead maple wood. I think we need the Drs imput

If some of my wild maple trees jump the fence over onto my neighbor's property could I tap them over there or would I have to chase them back to my place? It's just that I think some of my trees are over on the Government property next door and IF they are mine I would like to tap them!!
