Paddle bit for tapping??

We've been using a 7/16" paddle bit for tapping because thats how grandpa did it. Is there are reason this is not as ideal as a round bit?? Also what kind of round bit is best???

I believe paddle bits are to hard on the hole as far as tearing the wood and not getting a nice uniform size. You can get a nice small bits that are for taping trees. I have more holes in the side of my leg fron twist type bits that are 10" long. I like the smallers 3" bits because they help you guage the depth of the hole.

Put a small block of wood on it to stop at the proper depth. Also let it bottom out against the tree bark and it will pull all the chips out. I use a twill drill made for wood. Best thing since sliced bread.
