you got to be kidding! I don't even know where to start. can't spend 30 cents for a spile, he probably has that in the copper. I'm going to wash some barrows and buckets and then go hug my trees.

I was just looking for vacuum set-ups and saw this tree marked that looked a little small...and it scared me a bit!!!

from lesson 3
my notes
1. always wear camo and sneak up on tree
2. use drill with low battery
3. use 3/4 drill bit or bigger and ream that baby out to 1" and go 2 1/2 inches deep in a 5-6 inch tree.
4. copper pipe and drive that baby home with 2x4
5. nail in the tree also.
6. save milk jugs and spare rope

got it!! now to go kill some trees!!!

Why didnt he just bring out a hole saw:cry:

Buffalo Creek Sugar Camp
02-05-2010, 09:39 AM
I like the way he said to use the smallest nail possible to do less damage to the tree. As big of a hole he drilled and hammered it in, I bet the tree will die anyway.

maplecrest
02-05-2010, 09:42 AM
well he split the tree so being smaller than i would tap how long will the tree live under those contitions? thinking of the way my fore fathers did it my live 50 years? just think a proud sugar maker on u tube

I hope.:(

My only surprise in watching that video was that the guy didn't suggest drilling all the way through the tree to get two holes for the effort of 1 and double your sap production.

Nice job Jethro!!

I don't think it was a joke. I think he, in his mind is being helpful to others. I love the part about being cheap and then investing about 5 times the cost of a tap. The coment about not hurting the tree with the nail was the best!!!!

Wanabe1972
02-05-2010, 12:11 PM
Why didnt he just cut the tree down and shake the sap out into a bucket?

Clan Delaney

Sap flows DOWNWARD?!?!? Holy carp! That's what I've been doing wrong all this time!!! Wait here while I run out and pull all my collection buckets out of the tree canopy.

Sure this guy is making big mistakes and the power of YouTube lets him share them with the world, but he is making his own syrup and his daughter is probably pretty proud of it and him.

Take it easy. We all started out somewhere. I first tapped a maple with a hunk of a broken TV antenna.

Granted I was only 11.

Ken please stop putting your videos on youtube:D You know what is funny in my mind is he said he will come back in a few days and there will be a gallon in the jug. Notice his peice of tubing is long enough to touch the bottom of the milk jug. I am willing to bet when it cools down at night it sucks all that sap right back in the tree. He makes me very proud of my operation.

It is very sad and maddening to watch that video. Then I checked out the other link that was posted of his NEWSLETTER.

I do have to say that I think he is trying to do something right but hasn't been shown or told the rights and wrongs of tapping trees and sustaining a healthy stand of trees. It looks like his stand of maples are very young and he isn't thinking of the future of that stand.
I think if he is shown and explained how to sustain that nice stand that it would be around for his children.

I do have to say that it was great to see him with his children doing something as a family.

This guy is a total dumb ***. What is he thinking. Who on here lives the closest to him. They should go over to his place and teach him how to tap trees.

Ken I was just poking fun. You have posted enough on here for us to know you would not be this guy.

02-05-2010, 07:10 PM
Wow. That video is a shame. Just imagine all the thousands, or millions of people who will view that and say "oh my god, thats what they do to get maple syrup from the tree?"

I'm going out to hug my trees too. And reassure them that I will never do that to them.

That right there is the reason some people say "no" when asked about tapping their trees. And who could blame them after seeing something like that.

Ken I was just poking fun. You have posted enough on here for us to know you would not be this guy.

I finally got it to load. Man if everybody drilled 5/8 holes in baby trees the maple industry would be gone in no time. Of course hes from Minnisota if he was a Canuck I would have him sent to french school as punishment. Wonder how much sap runs down the trees. Owell he dosn't have a beard so it isn't me. Or a tuque.

Homestead Maple
02-05-2010, 07:39 PM
Now I know why my trees don't give much sap.... I need to drill a bigger hole! Any of you guys have to sneak up on your trees so they don't see the drill and run away?

BoarsNest
02-05-2010, 07:47 PM
I thought he said he's from Michigan. His website is survivalnut.com - we aren't all that way in Michigan. The economy's bad but we aren't sneaking up on trees to suck them dry. He probably took that copper tube from my house, I hope my wife doesn't need a shower tonight.

KenWP
02-05-2010, 07:54 PM
Yea your right Michigan. You can tell I am a Canuck can't tell one state from another. I do have to tie a pork chop on my neck for the cat to lick my face but so far the trees don't run away.

Curiously bad video.

What is instructive and heartening to read is the response from people on this board.
After a few (many) choice bits of profanity directed at the YouTuber, everyone really shows a deep respect and depth of knowledge for the trees and the sugaring process. Your reponses made more of an impression on me than the stupid video.

WESTVIRGINIAMAPLER
02-05-2010, 09:59 PM
Ok, Ok! I have to agree he is hard on the little tree, but I am sure when many of us that had no sugaring experience was starting out, we done some pretty dumb things. None of his ideas are bad if you were green and had never seen any syrup operation or didn't know what you were doing.

theres a Vid on youtube where a guy uses a chainsaw and cuts a big hole and puts a culvert pipe in the tree. just havent found it again yet, i been looking though

I might have to take this one as a insult. The goof so far is going to drill trees with no shirt on. This one will take a hour or so to load.

If the "Survival Guy" can screw up tapping a tree (the easy part) that bad what is the rest of his operation like?

red maples
02-06-2010, 10:59 AM
I showed my wife last night she was a little shocked.

I noticed something it looks like he tapped this tree before look at the big dark mark on the right side of the tree does it look wet like it was drilled before and trying to heal and cover it like a tree will do covering a broken or dead branch??

KenWP
02-06-2010, 11:02 AM
Took over a hour and half to load but got it watched. He is from Ontario and me thinks he's been smoking something. Dosn't have a beard either so it's obvious he's not a real sugar guy. I want to see him put his finger in 219 degree syrup and lick it off.

smitty76
02-06-2010, 12:28 PM
Ken, I think your correct on the smoking something. I was wondering about the old "finger in the boiling sap trick" myself.

There are some real proffessionals out there huh.

02-08-2010, 09:56 AM
Well gee I am a complete noob and I know not to do that, jeez why not just drill right through the tree, then heck you got 2 taps, one on each side............... The wacko group that camps in the rain forest and cries for the trees should be alerted to this guy......
