This is my first time tapping. I took a chance and tapped a tree on Sunday because the weather is whacked, silver maples bud early, and wanted to see what I'd get. Today my bucket yielded less than half a cup.
I brought it in and poured the sap into a small sauce pan. The sap was clear and it tasted just like water. I placed the sauce pan on my stove and raised the heat just enough for it to simmer but not boil so as to not burn it to the pan as it cooked.
It was cool watching the sap change from clear to dark amber. I got just enough syrup for my two boys, my wife, and I to dip our finger and get a taste. Wow! it was good and I can't wait for the sap to really start flowing.
My wife has been rolling her eyes when I talk about sugaring, building a block evaporator, reading the forum, getting supplies, etc. However, she is on board after tasting the syrup tonight. We put the kids to bed and she was already talking about asking our neighbors if we could tap their trees. :D I love it!!!
