I use a 1/2 Threaded coupling for my 5/16" tubing tools. I found 2 types when I went to pick some up. One was a thin walled short maybe 1 1/2" long and I found one that was a lot heavier and about 2" long. I went with the later.
Before I split them I ran a 1/2" drill bit 1/2 way thru to get rid of the threading, this is where the barbed part will be.
I also found with the last tool I made that once I welding the split coupling into the jaws of the vise grips I ran the 1/2 drill bit back in the end that I already drilled out. When you cut the coupling in half you loose a little from the thickness of the saw blade which made the fitting just a little too tight. So I redrilled it and it made a world of a difference.
