I found a 4X14 evaporator. It needs a stack and firebricks. It is an old one. It has flat pans. It needs some work done. I don't no how much yet. I will find out tomorrow. The guy is selling it for his grandparents. I can get it dirt cheap give me you thoughts on it I will post pictures of it tomorrow. How many taps would be the minimum if I boil twice a week. It isn't airtight and doesn't have a blower. How many gallons per hour should I expect from it. If I buy it I will have a 2'X33" barrel evaporator for sale. What is a ballpark price for it.

Oh it's a Warren.

Is this the same one currently on ebay? It has the exact same doors as the remains of my great, great grandfather's evaporator from the early 1900's.

If you figure about 1gph per 100 in^2 (rule of thumb for flat pans) you'll get about 80gph, which is pretty low for such a large evaporator. It's going to be a wood hog for the gph you're getting. You'll also need a lot of taps just to fill it. In my opinion a lot more than 100. I think it makes for a good antique piece, but unless some puts new pans on it you'd be better off with a smaller rig, even it is cheap money. Wood savings alone would make it worth it.

yeah true!!! the other thing you want to look at is the pans to make sure they are lead free. If its old it may have been lead sodered.

An update I decided im going keep looking. It has english tin pans and is a cross flow design. The last pan is "flue" pan it looks like the owners took a pan and added these cup things that hang down into the firebox. It is on westernmass craigslist. If someone else wants it pm me and i will give you the owners phone #. If you want pictures email the person and he will send you a ton of pictures.
