anybody made a home made log splitter. got any pics or plans you could share?

Yes we had one years ago. The funny thing is if you watch the movie Postman by Kevin Costner you will see almost the same thing used.

I have about 5 out there and want to kill some time this winter doing it again.
If your going to bend over and pick up the wood why not put it at a good working hight during splitting
Just a rambling list would be

1) 8 HP or bigger
2) 2 stage pump so it cycles fast and will kick butt in the big nasty crap
3) 4"cylinder
4)24" stroke
5) dont skimp on the ram slide or I beam
6) double detent valve so you can fetch wood as the ram retracts or splits wood
7) Have the hight of the splitting surface so the average log sits just below you belt buckel
8) I put rails down both sides of the I beam about 4" out and about 2" high so I can lean against the splitter and not have the ram hit you and it holds big wood on
9) mount it on a good wide stance big tires and a screw jack at the hitch side
