Who here Taps in the UP? I tap about 15 miles west of Iron River, Stambough, I guess.

Now that Henry Ford cut down all the Birch trees for his cars 100 years ago all you can do is tap Maples.

I don't tap in the UP, but I'm heading up that way tomorrow to the Lake States Logging Congress in Escanaba. First time to the UP... Need to find a UP t-shirt of some sort... Stopping to look at some equipment on the way...

The Ford family owned thousands of acers of the birch woods in the UP for the wood in his cars. Hear tell most of the nice wood paneling and frames on the woodys was Michigan Birch.

If you get a chance to get north in the UP, Tahquamenon Falls and Whitefish point are nice places to visit. Spent many vacations there with the kids. Also if it open try Browns fish market. Great fresh smoked whitefish.

As noted in the Sept Journal, the UP has a state park called Porcupine Mountains. 60,000 acres of old growth Maple and hemlock. Dont go there, you wont want to leave...South shore of Lake Superior

Theres Jasper Maple at Carney, Rock River Sugarbush at Autrain, U.P. Sugar Shack near the junction of Rt 2 and M 77- Blaney? and also RMG Family Sugarbush at Rudyard i think. They're a dealer for CDL. I'm from OH and am working at Big Bay. Clearing brush under power lines for power company Alger-Delta. Big Bay is where Henry Fords mill was. Theres still a big smoke stack standing.

I plan on tapping next year near Big Bay. I spent most of my summer putting up tubing. It looks like I will have 800-1000 taps. Still lots of unknowns however. There is an operation near Au Train with about 5000 taps. I think RMG is up to 15,000 taps. There are a few operations near Bark River. There is a sugarbush near Gould City. For the amount of maple around, really not a lot of syrup being made in the UP.

I forgot to say the firebrick in my evaporator came from Henry Fords Mill at Pequaming.

My uncle was out from Hermansville, near Escanaba, a few weeks ago. He told me that Jasper's in Carney had a great year, making around 4000 gallons.

I grew up in the UP in the Keweenaw Peninsula. We tapped every year. My dad is still in that area and still taps each year, runs about 100 taps. I know of a dozen or so people that tap in that area.

We love the U.P., plan to become parmanent someday. I know a place south of Houghton, twin lakes, sandy lake area with a large tubing operation. But, thats all I know, maybe he's posting here?
