Guys- How small a gas engine do you think I could put on an sp-11 to minimize gas usage. I want to make up a mini bush for my number one son Boo and I want to keep the gas down. Only maybe 130 roadsides. Theron

Knowing you Theron you better go 20 horse and get a bigger tank. Don't want it to over flow when you start adding more taps to it.

I was thinking Id run a 5hp on the sp-22 and maybe a 3 would be all I need on a sp-11? If I do Im going to get those check valve taps too. I think next year my next bush is across the road and that will still pump to the house. Once thats done thats all I can get without hauling sap I think. I gotta get a good pickup. This being stuck to the house sucks. I want to start expanding my horizons. Theron

I was thinking the same theron, i think a 3hp would turn the sp11 pretty good, you found a sp11 to theron?

Well, the rule of thumb is 1 HP electric equals 2 HP gas.
My SP-11 had a 3/4 HP electric on it, so I think a 2 HP gas would do it.
I do have a 4 HP that will go on it for this year, but I think it is over-kill. Gonna get the gas motor mounted one of these days (sits in the middle of my shop so I gotta get it out of the way) and can tell you all more then.

theron, in my past gas days i ran a 5 hp at an idle with a model 74 delaval vac pump. the pulley size will make a big difference. a three hp at an idle would work have to play with pulley size for right rpm 1750 or what have you

My first vacuum pump was a R-V 2 which I ran with a 3hp Briggs and Stratton
and was able to maintain 16-18" of vacuum on 900 taps with no problem. My system was not real tight so I think a 3hp engine would work well for you. I think I was stretching the capacity of that pump and I only used it that one year. It did get me started with vacuum though.

Maplecrest is onto the right idea. Converting to gas from elec is easy as long as you do a little math. The elec motor was either 1725 or 3450 RPMs give or take so the pully is for those rpms now if you go to gas you need to call the manf. and find out the best power band to run it at. My first vac set up I ran it way to fast for no benefit. I used more gas over speeded it and burned up the pump due to stupid oil line design by me. The second year I ran the new pump at 1/2 the speed and have the same results. Less oil, noise, gas. I vote for a easy to find 5-7 HP engines off ebay or Craigs list.
