Way off topic,,BUT,,I just traded some wood for an 1986 F-350 with a 6.9 int. diesel in it,,,it goes great but blows alot of smoke,,,I changed the fuel filt. air filt. and oil+filt,,,,,,,It is an old town truck,,I am sure it has 10000000 miles on it,,any ideas what makes it act so? Inj. pump?,,,,,does not seem to be burning oil????? AND will a 7.3 turbo with a 5 speed fit easily in this truck? Thanks,,Parker

my 7.3 blows smoke also. I am told is is just the feul we get now. I tend to lean to the fact the feul is not heating up enough to burn properly. The fords are fiinicky like that as they get older.

I ran an '86 F350 from almost new til fall of '02, and about 220,000 miles. The engine needed a rebuild at 160,000, maybe thanks to neglect (before I used it all the time!). But we had to have the injector pump rebuilt twice in that time. It would smoke like crazy, and be very sluggish. And I'm sure there weren't any turbos back then.

It would be a safe bet to say that the injectors need rebuilding. I had 7.3 diesels for the last 18 years. Now have gas,

It might well be a wear issue, but it may also be a metering of fuel issue. I drive school bus and occassionally they get one that smokes (Black smoke on shifting and anytime it is working harder). The mechanics have to adjust the insector pump and it often fixes the issue. I am not sure whether yours would have this adjustment capability. The smoke , if black, is unburnt fuel, meaning too much fuel is being injected, more than can be burnt in the cylindar for lack of enough oxygen. This may or may not be your problem. Worn injectors can be a cause of too much feul too.
