Go for it. I tap a few soft / silver maples every spring. They make good syrup.

Lot's of us tap silver maples. Mine give better sugar content then the reds and sugar maples even. You have to watch them and the first sign of the little feelers on the buds pull the taps or the syrup smells terrible. I had one this spring gave me 5 gallons of sap a day also.

There's nothing wrong with silver's. I have 20 acres of them I tap. They don't yeild quit as much sap as other maple's about a third less but the sugar content is the same as other maple's.

Right now people are tapping lakes rivers gardens and feilds and such so maples are sort of way in the future. If you have silvers and have the resources to tap them go for it. Just remember that they bud early compared to other trees and plan according.

Spile- yes, I tapped some good urban silvers two seasons ago in british columbia...made very respectable syrup- was quite high in sugar content- we averaged close to 4% sugar. If we had them around here I would not hesitate to tap them...

I have some huge silvers I tap... they are all 3 tappers. Mine ran really well this year, with a slighly below 2% (just a tad) but they made up for it in volume. But as Kenwp say's they do bud early.
