Why is firewood so much a cord?

Firewood here runs anywhere from 60 to 90 bucks a cord sometimes delivered sometimes not. You have to watch because some guys sell face cords as full cords. Neighbour told me he had 14 cords of maple in a pile turned out to be about 5 cords if you went by 128 sq. ft.

funny that this thread should come up- I spent 45 minutes on the phone yesterday with the folks at Hahn- they make some nice processor heads and the like so when I saw their firewood rig I thought I would check in...

they are currently working on one that will process longer wood- the one in the video will do no more than 18" wood. 24" would be the target size for the bigger one. 16" max diameter. Hahn claims 2+ cords an hour. current price is about $25K.

you can get a 3pt hitch one for around 14-15K, but they are not nearly as rugged as the hahn appears to be.

here is their website

Why is firewood so much a cord?

Mainly because of the pulp prices. Around here the loggers can get 700 for a load of pulp , so why sell it less than that for firewood? If you want cut split and delivered 200 a cord.:o :o

How many fingers do you think you'll have left by the end of the day. Pretty cool though.

This ones a neat idea, but slow.

I would like to see one of those processors try to process some of the locust I cut. Might blow a hydraulic line on two.

we just got a blockbuster 22-20 processor It take up to 22" log and splits up to 24" long. It will do 2-3 cord an hour and to think I still burn oil.

My uncle made a log splitter with a old haybaler. It works pretty good but all he has for firewood is poplar and nothing over probbably 6 or 8 inchs. The rental place in town has a log splitter that splits both ways and is a lot faster. But you need two guys at least to make it pay and keep up to it.

The guys at work made a big splitter this spring that runs off the hydraulics on our excavator. I'd say we can do 36" diameter wood, up to 36" long. It stands vertically, and uses one of the rams from a drill rig. Some of the chunks we are splitting need to be pushed into place with our other mini-excavator. I'm trying to get one of the guys who's good with photography to put something up on youtube. When he does, I'll let you guys know.

As far as wood splitters goes, Northern Tools makes a very nice regular splitter with a Honda Engine and the wings on each side and it has a 4 way splitter attachment that bolts on. They appear to be very well made and are around $ 1200 to $ 1300 and up. Not sure if there are any of them up North, maybe some on here have seen a store.

Didn't mean to forget, Brandon takes the thunder on the hillbilly chopping wood. I remember Brandon posting thus last fall and after enough digging I found it. It sticks in your mind when you saw something like that.
