After seeing all the posts regarding the low sugar content this year, and observing the same thing in the small number of trees I tap (sugar less than 2.0%, often much less) I wondered why it was so widespread. First thing that came to mind was all the rain we had in wMass last year, I think we got over 60 inches in our town. I asked a few tree physiologists that I know if that could have been a factor and they said it was possibly related because the conditions would have been poor for photosynthesis and thus carbohydrate storage (long periods of cloudy weather). They said low carb storage could also happen during drought years. So I wonder if any of you long time sugarers have noticed low sugar content in years past following really high rainfall years or droughts?
