Checking lapierre’s website and saw the Hurricane 5 wood-fired evaporator (http://equipementsderabliere.elapierre.com/down/87.pdf). They’re claiming 650 stack temps, 2100 degree temps under the pans, and loading every 45-60 minutes. Is this legitimate? Seems pretty crazy…too bad they didn’t make anything smaller than a 3x10. I wonder if the evap rates are any better, or it's just better because much less wood is used and it's burned far better.

I saw the add for that new arch and it got me curious. Seems to good to be true that you can go more than 30 min with out putting wood in. I will have to see it at a demonstration I guess

It does sound too good to be true. It blew me away when I saw those numbers.

With my 3x10 and dry pine slabs is more like 3-4 minutes.

From my understanding, it is built on the wood gasification system principle. I talked with someone who is familiar with a wood gasification system recently and they told me they build a fire every evening with an armload of wood and it burns aprox 45 to 60 minutes and it heats up a water tank that holds 1200 gallon of water and that water ciruculates for the next 24 thru the house and this is enough to heat the house for 24 hours. Fairly good size house, so I guess if it will work for that, then it will work for evaporation.

Lapierre did a short presentation at our district OMSPA meeting about this evaporator. The video was quite impressive. By controlling where and how much air they inject into the fire box and making other improvements they are talking craaaaazy efficiency rates for a wood buring evaporator. I'm interested but the price tag was a bit steep. I'd be more likely to go with the straight Hurricane than pay the premium for the Force 5.

what was their price tag for a set up to fit your pans?

A LOT more than I'd be willing to pay but I can't remember the exact number. At 5x16 the Force 5 would be waaay to fast. I wouldn't be able to keep sap in front of it. I'd buy something smaller with all new pans that could process about 225 GPH.
