I am running a 2x6 FLAT pan. Currently I have 3.5 inches between the bottom of my pan and the top of the rear wall of my firebox I bricked in.

Is this gap about right?

When I had the fire ripin yesterday I got a good boil about 3/4 of the way back in the pan just shy of where the pre heater drips in.

Sound ok?
thx

I would think 2" or less would be better as long as you can pull sufficient draft.

I figured mine at 27" wide with an 8" stack requires 1 7/8" for the square inches to be right. If you have a 24" wide with an 8" stack I would go to 2" or so to keep the square inches right.

8" stack has 50.28 square inches

divided by 24" = 2.095"

That formula seamed to work pretty well for my homemade unit.

josh, the boys have it pretty good. It sounds like you have a good boil now.

Hey Tap, do you think its worth bringing it up another inch??? I got a 13 foot stack on this bad boy. No flames out the top yet!

If your pan is boiling hard now I think you are all set. The back part of the pan is where the cold sap is coming in and that will stop the boil. Maybe put some thought into a preheater to raise the temp of the sap would be a better place for your energy this year.
