First Draw

Drew off my first syrup last night. I had two draws and each one was a quart and a half. Med amber and plenty of niter... two prefilters and the felt did the trick though... I drew off directley in to my finsher with the filters on top... worked great.. I need sap!!!!!!!!!!!

I am envious. I am waiting for sap to make my first syrup also. I had biscuits for supper last night plain as I am not in the mood to buy my syrup just yet.

Here in northern NH, we generally make more syrup in April than in March.

Too cold right now but....

If the weather forecasters are rights, things will run on Sat thru Monday. Spose to be a high of 47 Tomorrow (Sat), 46 (Sun) and 43 (Monday) with hard freezes in between.

We've got about 250 of 300 or so taps set out and haven't had a decent run yet. Maybe about 75 frozen gallons. We'll probably sweeten the pans on Sunday. Pretty much the same time as last year.

Cardigan99 - It's amazing, I'm 40? miles south of you and 900 ft elevation and I'm at 3.4 gal/tap as of last night. Ran hard after 3:30PM today. You'll get a real charge this weekend! Good Luck! Bruce

The same thing happened here in Loudon yesterday. It didn't thaw out until 2:30 and didn't start running good until 3:30 or so. It was still coming in good at 5:30 when it was only 31 degrees in the shade. I am over 3 gallons of sap per tap as well.

Don't feel too bad Cardigan. I'm pretty much in the same boat. I've only drawn off a couple of gallons so far but, this weekend should be a different story. It's been mostly dark amber with lots of niter also. I have to clean the Orlon filter after each draw from the evaporator.

Sweetend the pans today and pulled about 2 gallons of medium. Pretty much fully tapped except about 20 - 25 onesies. We've gotten pretty close to 300 gallons so it was a good weekend. Bruce I had read somewhere that 1000 feet in elevation was the equivalent of roughly 100 miles further north. We've still got a solid two feet of snow in the yard and a little more than that in the woods but I figure we'll loose half of that this week if the weather holds. First boil last year was 3/9 so we're almost a week later this time. Jerry, very little niter today. Hope this weekend went well for you.
