Another preheater thought. I'm thinking of making a cylinder type preheater that would have soft copper tube wound to the inside diameter of an 8"x24" copper tank. I'd solder the ends shut and have a valve to drain water and relieve pressure from the tank. This whole contraption would just suspend over the back pan and and build slight pressure. Any thoughts??
Thanks,
John

Sealing it sounds sorta dangerous if you forget to let out the pressure. Are you thinking the cyllinder would have water in it to start with?
If the cyllinder is full of hot water I like the thought - heat will transfer to the cold tubing/sap better from hot water than from hot air.
Do you have some 8" copper pipe lying around or are you thinking of buying it? I would think that a flat surface would capture the heat better than a rounded one if you're buying.
