I would get a new one. I have experience with inaccurate thermometers, ands its not a lot of fun.

A new one is cheap insurance against making thin, not quite syrup, or too heavy syrup that crystalizes after it cools.

I've done it both ways. We won't do that again!

Just because the glass is cloudy doesnt mean its shot it just means water got behind the glass. Pop the glass off and see how its working. I would file, gring, peal back the lip that holds the glass in and pull it out and let the dial area dry out and get a new peice of glass at the hardware store (flashlight glass) silicone in. Call it a spare.

Is a dial thermometer necessary if you have a syrup hydrometer? I also have a digital thermometer that I used last year that I am planning on using this year. Thanks,
