stove pipe size

Was wondering if anyone knows if a 6" stove pipe is big enough for a 2x4 pan on a 5' long arch or should I use 8".

I would go with the 8 and if need be put a damper in to slow it down if you need. Whats the cost differance on 6 to 8. You will expand one day.

I agree go with 8 if you can swing the cost difference. I have six and wish I went with 8 after seeing the draft

The more smoke you let out the more draft air you let in. Do you have a forced draft or not. with forced draft 6 is ok, if natural draft 8 in is worth the cost. I have a 2x6 with 10" pipe and forced draft. works great. no matter how big the forced draft fan is. It will only push in what can get out the stack.

wow my 2x4.5 came with a 10in when i bought it at bascom. being a newbie i just thought it was correct. seems a bit of an over kill but it sure does get a good draft.

I'd say you could consider the 8 inch. However, my 2 x 4 was equipped with a 6 inch. The poor old thing requires no forced air. If I open the lower draft door, I'll boil over within minutes. My chimney has 2 90 degree elbows to vent the stack out the gable end with no damper. Then again, I burn dry pine with a hint of hardwood. This may effect the process, I'm sure.

Right or wrong, it's what happens here.
