I met some Amish that had came to the tubing seminar in Somerset County, Pa. They picked up their new RO while they was there, a 1000 gal a hour unit. They needed it pretty bad for their 7000 tap operation in southern Kentucky. Yeah Sugar maples! South of the Mason-Dixon, Don't tell Al Gore it may ruin his global warming gig.

Mennonites were the first thing that popped in my head as well. They like modern technology and running water.

There are several of the Amish maple producers in this area that have RO's. They take the electric motors off and run them with a hydraulic motor.

Stupid guestion how do they run the hydralic's. Lived around them my whole life also and never could figure out all the rules. Except courting day was Sunday afternoon.

The ones i've seen are run by a diesel engine driving a hydraulic pump. As a matter of fact, the local dealer for maple supplies is Amish and does a great job at it. He is a dealer for Leader, and has a large inventory and also buys bulk syrup as well.

Finzel,
I was talking to my son last night and he said that on sunday he and a couple of other folks got stuck driving in to finzel swamp. Had a heck of a time getting out. took about 3 hrs.
I am hooking up electric at my tanks on saturday and then getting pump and releaser hooked up. then a number of odds and ends to wrap up, plus 600 more buckets and I will be ready to go. I hope to tap my tubing presidents day and the buckets the following weekend.

Dave, 1200 buckets i hope to he helps you thats alot work for one man or do you have other people that also help?
Dave Y
02-04-2010, 05:50 PM
Actually he doesn't help that much he has been gone from home for almost seven years now. He is also married and works for Maryland-DC Audubon. I have a crew of people that help. That I pay to help. All my sap gets trucked. I have two that I haul sap with. I am hoping he will come for the weekend here in a couple weeks and help tap

02-04-2010, 06:18 PM
Well at least you have some help thats alot by yourself! Let me know the difference between gravity and vacum. I'd like to try vacum next year if the funds are availible.
Dave Y
02-04-2010, 09:22 PM
They {who ever that is} say vacuum on 2000 taps will pay for itself in a half season. You should do very well with your taps if you have your mainlines sized correctly.

Hey dave we got plenty. I live about 10 min from sweet maple so i'd say we got 40" just like he said. It will be tough getting around in the woods but we'll manage. How much did you guys get?
You guys have all the snow this year. We only have about a foot on the ground, and temps in the 40's today.
You might need snowshoes to tap this year.
