Hello to all. This is my first season and the posts here have been enlightening. I am going to make a block arch(3 high) and use 4 steam pans with pallets for fuel. I am going to get a duct transition for a floor register for the back to tie into the block. Can I use regular duct pipe(Homedepot) for the chimney or do I need stovepipe? Also is there a place near me for firebrick and stovepipe at a good price. I am working this with a friend and we plan on tapping 25 trees this weekend(depending on weather). Thanks for any input.

Problem with Galvanized is with a wood fire the heat will burn off all the coating and will end up in the syrup. You can do it its cheap and last a few years. Test boil and burn the heck out of it and scrub the white deadly powder off it. Dont breath the fumes during the first test boil. You will have a raspy cough for a week or two if you do.

Thanks for the input. I will look for the stovepipe.

Groves (http://www.mapletrader.com/community/member.php?u=4388) made his stack out of blocks. Check out the pics of his setup (http://matthewgroves.com/Hobbies/Sugaring09.html). No need to worry about galvanized.

I did see that one but my worry is blocks falling. Hopefully I will get the stove pipe, at least a few sections, this weekend and finish my arch. This weekend or early next week I also hope to tap. Does anyone have a suggestion for a reliable digital thermometer?
