I know this must have been discussed before and I did a search but I can not find it so here goes.

Where can I finid a chart that tells me that at 1.5% sugar in the sap I will have to boil so many gallons of sap to get one gal of syrup. If someone can point me in the right directoin it would be appreciated.

Thanks

57.3 gallons---divide 86 by the % of sap

I just looked at that link and yone would need an expensive calculator and the know how to use it. I am looking for a simple conversion chart which state if my sugar content of sap is 1.5% then it would take --- gallons of sap to boil off to make 1 gal of syrup. Reading that Rule 86 link gave me a headace. I believe in the K.I.S.S. theory. (keep it simple stupid)
If any one can help this dummie it woud be appreciated.

Brian,
Any calculator should work..., just divide 86 by 1.5 ( the sugar content of your sap). Should look like this 86 / 1.5 (your sap sugar %) = 57.33 gals sap needed to make one gal syrup.
Other examples: 86 / 2 = 43 gals sap to make 1 gal syrup , 86 / 2.5 = 34.4 gals sap to make 1 gal syrup.

Hope this helps.

So if I read this properly if I have 2.5% sugar measured with my sap hydrometer then I would need 34.4 galls of sap to make 1 gal of syrup. As a rule.

Brian,

Glad that cleared it up some and I'm with you all the way on the "keep it simple".

When the rule of 86 was introduced it was all about just exactly that .

Good luck this season, I have 40 some gallons of 2% sap collected this week should give me close to one gallon, if I can get some more sap to chase it through and still have some in the pan.

I plan to boil Sat AM on my half pint, it's about to be fired up for the first time this year.....but I've been fired up for weeks!
