Today February 21, 2009 Wayne County, New York.

I Set my 73 taps on gravity tubing. Not the best of days for sap to run. But after I set the last tap and walked down to the tank to put the main line in. To my surprise and delight there was a stedy stream of sap flowing! I Still have 12 buckets to hang. Will do that another day when it is running good. That will give me 85 for this year.

Middlebury is starting to get up my way. I am looking for the guys in North Vermont to chime in pretty soon I hope. I can only go around in the bush empty handed so long tramping out trails in the bush to all my trees.

Cabot, Vt- Northeast corner of Washington County- I'll start this Wed. after I get some work finished up for a local contractor whether it's a good time to start or not. I'm hoping this last 2 days of warm and rain formed another good crust that will let me get around the woods on snowshoes that much quicker!

I started tapping 2/21/09 and finished thursday, I had a friend help on sat, My dad and uncle on tues. I fixed all the problems flagged on wed in Dads woods.
Dad and I tapped the other bush and fixed the lines thursday. I have 200 or so around the house to do with my daughter. I saved those for her.

Thinking of tapping this weekend. Northeast Addison County at the base of Camels Hump. 1200' elevation and facing due north. Looks like first big run could be next week and then another cool down the following weekend. Thoughts? Pete

Thinking about this weekend too! That way at least I'll be ready. Need a test boil and should be ready to go. Going to 160 taps this year. The bad news is my oldest son fractured his elbow. There go's a third of my team for gathering.
We have the sugarhouse ready to go and the boys have been using there new loft getting ready to sleep overnight during sugaring. Hope they leave room for old Dad!!!!
Take care and good luck.

I live in Island Pond and I'm hoping to start tapping this Thursday or Friday. We still have about a 10" snow pack in the sugar bush so I'm sure everything is still pretty frozen. Temps have been below zero for the past three or four nights, and we struggle to see the 20's during the day. I only hang 70 buckets so I can afford to wait to the last minute, but I don't want to miss the first run so it can't hurt to hang em anyway I figure. Besides, it's a good excuse to hang out in the sugar shack. Come on sap!!

You guys in Vermont are gettin my direction finally. I am just north of Stanstead 8 miles and trying to guess the weather. It says it is going to warm up but it also calls for snow every day also. My wife comes from here and she keeps talking about sugar snow. I tasted it and it tastes like frozen water to me.

Tapped today in the town of Coventry,Orleans County,Vermont. Snow still above knees in most places in my woods. Put out 100 buckets on the 5/16 blue plastic spouts..a first for me. Put the smoke and steam hood pipes up thru the roof. Will do a small test boil with water tomorrow morning to try everything out. Nice to work in the woods without gloves, feels good!!

I tapped 15 trees over the weekend and will do 15 more today. 30 total--did 5 taps last year (my first season). I had a few trees run over the weekend and yielded about 2.5 gallons of sap. It is supposed to be below freezing tonight and in the high 30s tomorrow. Good luck all.
