I checked the sugar content on sap I gathered last night but I can't seem to find any temperature coversion charts for the sap hydrometer. Sap temp was 42° , the reading I got was 2%. If the reading is valid for 35-38° how do you convert?

According to the chart with mine you would minus .3 brix which would make it 1.7%. Of course mine is made in China and the directions are in French.

Ken,
Would it not be the other way around? Assuming that the colder the sap the more dense it would be, and the hydrometer would float higher? Or am I upside down on this one. Do you have a copy of the chart you are using?

Thanks

Yes that is why you have to subtract brix. The hydrometers are set up for warm sap so the colder it is the more you take off.

32 to 41 degrees subtract .4 brix
41 to 50 degrees subtract .3 brix
50 to 59 degrees subtract .2 brix
59 to 68 degrees subtract .1 brix

I could also type it in French and in celsius if you like.

John,
I think this is what you are looking for. Most sap hydrometers are calibrated for 38 degrees F:

for 32-46F, add .0 brix
for 47-56F, add .1 brix
for 57-61F, add .2 brix
for 62-64F, add .3 brix
for 65-68F, add .4 brix
for 69-72F, add .5 brix
for 73-75F, add .6 brix

Above 75 degrees, I think you need to hit the beach.

See a previous thread I started regarding testing the hydro. I went back and forth with Chase, because my hydro was not showing zero for distilled water at the appropriate temperature. I still don't understand why, but they claim you can't use water to test it.

And the Long stem one I have which goes to 15 is calibrated for warmer temps go figure.

Marc,
Thank you for the chart. That's looks better, looked at mine again last night and it is certified for 35°F, but it looks like there is no noticable difference between 32-46F on your chart.
Amen on the 75 degrees.
