With last night dropping to 13 deg F, I had a good amount of ice in my roadside buckets and in my 35 gal drums that tubing runs into. I know I'm gaining at least a half point on the sugar content and with my 2 x 6 flat (4 pan) set-up I need all the help I can get. When collecting sap I use plastic pails that I dump into a 55 poly drum in my truck, last night I picked up a tip. I usually toss the ice right there at the tree but I was rushing and dumped everything into the barrel on the truck, with all the ice chunks floating on top it kept the sloshing to a mininum. There was 45 gal in there when I came home.

In the old days people who had to carry water used to float chips of wood in the buckets to cut down on the water slopping around.
