I dug this out of the barn. Does anyone know how to put oil in this?
There is a rod on the side that almost looks like a dipstick. It does not come
all the way out. Also where do I buy vacum pump oil? Thanks..

I use Dexron ATF in my SP-22.

I went to the local Farm and Feet (I think it is like your Tractor Supply place) to buy Dextron ATF. On a hunch, I asked if they had vacuum pump oil. SURE DO!! About the same price as ATF, so that took care of that...

Thanks for the info guys. I'll get that dipstick out one way or another.

Dextron seem like it would be a littel light in a piston pump,,I run 15w-40,with a littel mystry oil,,for a vane pump I run dextron or 10Whyd. oil,,,,but a piston pump on the inside is kinda like the bottom end of an engine (crankshaft-bearings),,,,vacuum pump oil at a farmstore is for vanepumps,,,not piston pumps.
I am pretty sure one of my sp-22's has a tag that says use 30wt nondetergent oil on it,,,,but that stuff looks like honey when it cold-
Seems like a piston pump would get real hot with ATF.,,,,

Parker Dexron is very good at lubricating and removing heat. I let my SP 22 run for a couple of hours at 22" on Sunday and the only part that was hot was the cover where the reed valves are on the top. The head, sides of cylinders and crankcase were barely warm.

Just to clarify--the vacuum pump oil I got said "For all Vane and Piston pumps"...

Sounds like a winner. Keep in mind that these pumps dont need alot of high teck oil to lube them its the heat that we cause them that changes the rules. The ability to supply them with plenty of oil under high heat and vacuum is the trick.

Is the heat mostly an issue for pumps run inside the sugar house or out buildings? I ran an sp-11 last year and did not see any evidence of over heating. It was outside with no cover.

Mark NH Just curious--how many inches did you have the vacuum set at??

I checked with my father who services compressors at his small engine repair shop and was a master mechanic on heavy construction for 30 years prior and his thoughts were the biggest concern with whichever you choose is to go with a nondetergent to minimize any foaming. atf, nondetergent 30, compressor oil, any should work

To 5 gallons I mix the following:

3.5 gallons vacuum pump oil
1-1.25 gallons bar and chain oil
1-2 quarts mystery oil

Mix it up and use. Works good in the piston pumps.
