Looking for plans and picture or two of homemade moisture trap. I searched all over site with no luck but I know there have been some on here. I have a good idea of how to build one but want to ask and avoid any mistakes others have made if possible. Also what type of valve works best to drain the trap a brass check valve or some type of flapper valve?

Here is a link for a homeade moisture trap. I never built one but the one i bought from cdl appears to be built the same as this one. Mine has a brass check valve on the bottom. http://mapletrader.com/community/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=20599

GGervais,
Thanks but the link doesn't work. Takes me to a blank reply.

Originally posted by MOUNTAINVAN ..... Russ, here goes, I'll try to explain it clearly.
top of the trap 1.5" pvc passing through a 1.5-3" pvc adaptor( I had to ream out the stop inside the 1.5-3" adaptor for the 1.5" pipe to pass through.)
1.5-2'' adaptor on the bottom of the 1.5" pipe.
2" pvc with 5/8" holes drilled down the pipe(4 around 8 down)
rubber ball inside of 2" holey pipe( ball will slide up and down 2" pipe, but will not fit through 1.5" and plugs the air intake at the 1.5-2" adaptor.)
2" cap at the bottom of 2" pipe so ball stays in.
THAT'S THE INSIDE PART.
OUTSIDE PART FROM 1" TO 3" ADAPTOR.
short piece 3" pipe
3" T ( side goes to releaser)
GOING TO BOTTOM OF TRAP.
3" pipe to cover up inside part.
3"T
3" pipe(short piece)
3"- 1.5" adaptor worked down to a 1/2 ball valve for drain.
FROM SIDE GOING TO RELEASER.
3" pipe(short piece)
3"T
3" PIPE
3" ELBOW
3" pipe(short piece) GOING INTO 3" T AT BOTTOM OF TRAP.
The trap looks like a big "O". The important part is to have solid pipe(1.5"on top)extending below the T going to the releaser. I tryed it out with my shop vac and it worked well. Van

I went a little simpler this year, even though I do have the trap explained above in use. I went to lowes and bought a clear whole house filter without a bleed valve, put in a raquet ball, and hooked it up. one of my releasers was blown over today with sap flowing and the vacuum pump running. Moisture trap was full of sap and not the vacuum pump, so it works.

I use the same at MV with the racquetball and works fine. I've never built up more then a couple oz's of sap in the filter (knock wood), but if you need to empty it, just unscrew the housing. Got the idea a few years back on the Trader. I was worried that the 3/4 intake would reduce my vacuum up stream. Not a problem.

i believe that I was the one who suggested the whole house filters with a racket ball inside. I have used them ever since I first started with vacuume and they work great.

my water trap is simply a large house hold water filter unit with out the filter and then you purchase a package of racket balls from walmart and put one in the water filter when it fills the ball will suck to the center port and stop it from going any further of course then you have to turn vacuum off and drain from a petcock that i added to the bottom of the housing

gmcooper If you find a good plumbing supply or go to www.plumbingsupply.com they sell Flood-guards. All you do is insert what ever size you want 2-3-4" flood guard into the correct size pvc and clamp it in. Use about a 2ft long piece and put threaded caps on the ends. Make the tube about 2ft long and put a boiler drain at the bottom. under $35
what you need
1 flood-guard 3"
24" X 3" PVC
Two reducing ends 3" to 2"
Two glue insert fittings 2" to 1" thread pvc
pvc T for boiler drain

I “had” a hobby releaser and it would test my moisture trap every run. I used the water filter and ball and works great.
P.S. the hobby releasers don’t work right, Lapiere is refunding peoples money on them. I returned my today.

we also had the hobby relaser and eventually had two moisture traps - the water filter with raquet ball was the best one we came up with- we made the hole where the ball sits on the canister top bigger (used a drill bit then sanded it smooth) - just make sure when you mount the filter canister that it is level - this way when it fills up with sap the ball will actually sit on the hole, blocking the sap flow...found this out the hard way- but those SP-11's are pretty durable pump heads.
