When did you start tapping last year, and when do you think you will be tapping this year?

Last year was late. We tapped March 15-16 and 22-23 but didn't make any syrup until the 29th. It was the latest start we've had in 20 years.

Not to far from Crandon, here in Spooner.
Last year was the first week of March, and the previous 4 years were either the last week of Feb (when everyone was talking global warming) and the first week of March.

We have a lot of frost in the ground, and next week has high temp around 25-33, so I am thinking it will March again this year...more time to get more trees on line!

I checked my log last weekend and I tapped on the 15th of March and the year before was the 12th. I said I tapped on the 15th last year but really didn't get a run till almost two weeks later.

Last year I tapped about 3/15, 2007 about 3/20, 2006 3/5, and 2005 2/25. I tap when the weather forcast looks good for flow after what i feel is a good time for trees to thaw out. Right now we have had so much cold that it will take about 3-4 days to thaw the trees. We have about 4 warmer days starting tomorrow but then too cold again. But after that the trees will not be frozen thru and a shorter warm spell will be when I tap. In the meantime any flow up and down in the tree helps raise the sugar% for when I do tap. I hope conditions to be right the week of 2/20 and if it is I will start. I am in the meantime still adding taps, fighting real deep snows on the leeward hillside I am doing. I was there yesterday and the snow is still about 4' deep on much of the hill and it is about a 40-50 degree slope which is hard on snowshoes but harder without.

Looked in the log book and basically for the past 20 years it slowly gets later and later past 3 years it has been the first week in march. Was really hoping for an earlier start this year but weatherman is showing another cold front moving in end of next week with below norm temps for the rest of Feb. Guess we will see. Jeff E. Im with you, global warming?

Last season we tapped on March 1st & 2nd. First syrup was made on March 9th And didn't boil again until March 14th! Looking to be about the same this year.

Our records are the opposite. Over the past 20 years our date of first boil has gotten earlier by about a week. I've got them all plotted on a chart for easy reference - and because I need to do something maple every day!

In 2008 we were all tapped by Feb 17 and boiled the last on April 14. I try and tap by Feb 14 but always miss a good first clean run. 2007 I tapped Jan 5 made syrup until Jan 16 and then it froze tight until Feb 23. This year I started tapping today but only some of my small southern bushes, they are running pretty good so I will boil some this week.
