Hey Guys, I Am Tapping My 225 Tomorrow. My Question Is What Are You Guys Paying For Cruchon Jugs, I Can Buy A Case Of 100 Quarts For $137. I Know The Sugar Hill Jugs Are A Little Cheaper But I Don't Like Them As Well. Also, I Live In Southwest Wisconsin And Was Wondering Where The Closest Bulk Syrup Buyer Is To Me ?:)

Why are you tapping tomorrow? It's way too early.

I bought those jugs last year and they all went bad on me. Won't buy them again. syrup was the right density and canned hot

TapMe,
What jugs did you buy last year, sugar hill or les cruchon ? The cruchon jugs seam to seal better for me.

The next seven days starting Thursday are going to be in the 40's, that's why I'm tapping tomorrow, I will have to ream my tap holes out the first part of March since I'm tapping early. What part of Clark county do you live in ?

the curchon ones. mold was on the tops of everyone that i opened. will not buy them again. there was a thread on the bottles I'm sure it is out there
I have never had any mold in any of my other containers. Probably just a box that was around for a while.

I live in southeastern Clark Co. Yeah, if you want to tap go ahead. I'm just saying I would never do it this early. Just way too early in my opinion. We typically don't tap until mid March here. Wouldn't want to deal with a month plus of winter weather out in the woods until the season really starts(everything will freeze up again, snow, etc ... it's only Feb 3rd). It'll take a little while for the trees to "wake up" as well.

what exactly do you suppose caused the mold?
Air leak in the cap?
Did syrup leak out?
non sterile jug?
tainted plastic?
syrup not at the proper density?

The Bacon jug is $40. bucks a case less than the Les cruchon , the bacon jug is made by sugarhill at their plant and shipped to Bacon. I have a few customers who request the Cruchon jug, so I order it for them , but what a waste of money.
Most sugarmakers and customers are penny pinchers and want the best value. That extra .40 cents per quart jug adds upfast.

I bought the Cruchon jugs before and did not like them. I currently use the sugarhill XL jug, it has an oxegen barrier on it. I have keep syurp for 2 years in them with no problems.

hard maple; never had a problem before my guess is that the jugs had been in storage a while. Even being cover in plastic and a box something happened. I can't pin point it but I would say something in processing. Just know that I will not buy them again. It could even have been me. Don't know

Mark,
I have made about five gallons of light amber, all from my south facing sugar maples. Trees won't run much until Monday or Tuesday then it looks good. I would sure think you could tap this weekend?
