I have found that the fire blanket\insulation comes in several weights. What weight have you folks that have used it under your fire brick used? It appears it comes in 4lb, 6lb and 8lb weight. Most of the post I have read indicate people are using the 1" thick but it doesn't discuss the weight.

Thanks for your input.

Shawk,

I used the 8lb. insulation. One inch thick. It has a 2600 degree rating. It's good stuff and I'm very happy with it.

Leader sell's it. However, I would reccomend searching the internet for it first. Its been a few years now, but I bought mine from Leader for around $230 and shortly after I got it, I saw an online pottery and kiln supply had it for a little over $100. Yeah, I was'nt too happy.

I wish I could remember the outfit that had it. Search around for it.

Maybe another Mapletrader user knows the name of the place?

Steve

A common brand name in the pottery (kiln) and metal working (forge) world is Kao Wool. As with most things, if you can find it somewhere other than a maple dealer you will save money.

I bought some today from Dominion and Grimm. Thought I was going to have to leave with out it as I had the same problem as the last time I went there. If its not listed in the catolouge so I can point to a picture of it or if its not on the shelf I can't figure out what the French names for things are sometimes. Lucky this time there was a evaporator sitting in the show room and useing the universal hand signs for wrapping around the bottom the guy figured out what I needed. But its $3:50 a square foot for the 8 pound stuff. Owell just think of all the syrup I am going to make. LOL
