I was taking a look at the weather for tonight and I was noticing a nice warmup for my area (northeastern CT) next week...40s during the day and teens/20s at night. Might be a nice sap run...
It turns cooler after that, but I thought I would mention it for people in other parts of CT that conditions might stay marginal after that. I'm targeting the 21st for my tapping, but I might want to see about some in early and see what happens.
Sugaring time is not that far away!!

I saw a sugar maple in Wallingford that had a few limbs trimmed off and the trunk was soaked with sap running out of the trimmed limbs! Looks like it's going to be in the 40's this weekend too....I still think it's a bit to early to tap, but if someone is adventerous, they could be making syrup right now!

I tapped my 50 something trees today, it was 5F this morning. I got going about noon, at 3 PM a few drops of sap from some of the smaller trees. Maybe enough to boil tomorrow as it's supposed to get up near 50.

Is it a problem tapping too early? Can the wood "seal over" if the sap doesn't run for, say, 3-4 weeks after you 1st tap?

3 to 4 weeks might be way too early Mark, I'd wait awhile up your way.
