I see in some of the posts a reference to "The Maple News". Is this a newspaper or somesort of newsletter. How do I get a copy, Who do I call, Where is it printed?
Thanks for any information.

I did find an interesting tidbit in the Maple News. In 1875, NH produced 244,000+ gallons of syrup and today it produces around 75,000. Guess people worked a lot harder then today as the technology is so much better and easier to make syrup today. :)

Probably that was due to the fact that everybody would make syrup to use for cooking and sweetening alot of things back then. Buying cane sugar was expensive. Making syrup was a way of life on a farm in those days. It's definately a interesting tidbit.

I thought the same thing when I read it, but still felt it was interesting. They were not efficient back then, so you can imagine compared to today how much work it was to make syrup. Probably a lot of the sap was carried totally by humans and what wasn't was by horses. Still is a lot of syrup for a state that is not bigger than NH.

Also maple sugar and cane sugar were about the same price back then. So it was a lot cheaper to produce sugar yourself than buy it. Then they could sell the surplus. Almost everyone lived on a farm and not much else is happening on the farm at sugaring time.

New England producers will always tell you they have twice the amount of syrup and taps than they really do :lol:

Just to nosey New Yorkers who come around and try to pry our trade secrets out of us. Especially those who come around offering Genny in trade. :lol: (Rick) :lol: Of course this include's my wife's family from Watertown and Eagle Bay N.Y. I always say I got the best thing that ever happened to N.Y and she moved to Vermont via Iceland , Maryland and Iceland again. :D

You are right We should be boiling 24/7 but instead on the computor 24/7. I said to my wife today that we will not be having an Easter egg hunt out side this year unless we put the eggs in the snow banks.

That's (Glenn doing a Q & A column) great, I talked to Glenn a few times. He is quite knowledgeable however he thinks his is the only way. I like most of what he says but don't accept it as GOSPEL. By the way, last time I spoke to him at the Winter Conference in Verona in Jan. He boils on a large flue pan (something like 6 x 16, oil fired) with no syrup pan. From the flue pan to the finisher. No auto draw off but keeps a constant flow drawoff for the finisher. Never saw it, but sounds interesting to say the least. I guess with 20,000 taps and good vacumn you get a lot of sap.

It is a good set up, Glen has 5 different woods around the area. The sap is 55 brix coming off the 6 x 16 set of flue pans then it goes to a 2 x 10 flat pan. The flat pan is changed every 3-5 hrs depending on the niter build up. It is amazing to watch him fill 2, 55 gallon drums an hr. 8O He has helped me a lot.

Sure enjoyed listening to him at the Verona conference in Jan. He really knows what he is talking about and as the say, the proof is in the pudding. Seems the majority of his syrup is always light and he probably gets a better per tap ratio than anyone else his size. :D

Join the NH Maple Producers Association and you wil get the Maple Syrup Digest as part of your membership, www.nhmapleproducers.com is their Web address.

The maple news is a different publication than the maple syrup digest.
The maple news is 7 issues per year and cost about $18.00
The digest is 4 issues per year and cost about $5.00
Most all state associations include the digest in the cost of membership

I'm not sure which publication you are looking for. As Keith said the Maple News and Maple Syrup Digest are 2 different publications. I get the Maple Syrup Digest which is published quarterly.

The Maple News is modern and contains a ton more information and the Digest is the same format for who know how many decades and doesn't contain much info. I guess that is why the prices are what they are. :?

The Maple News moved back to Greenwich NY. about 6-8 months ago. Not sure of his new address.
