On my 2x8 is a 1" copper feed line from the feed tank to the evaporator big enough to supply enough sap to the evap. The reason i ask this is my feed tank now has a 1" cupling in the bottom now from my old sit up. The new evaporator has a 1 1/4" fitting for the perheater. Haveing hard time finding copper or stainless that size. Found a 1 1/4" by 1" reducer if this would work. thanks for the help

1" would work, but you would be better off finding the size that fits your preheater. That way you would not run the risk of starving your preheater. IE not enough sap going into your preheater, making it not a efficent as it was made to be.

never mind

The evaporator manufacturers use one feed valve for all of their evaporators to cut costs. You will be fine using a 1" feed line with your 3x8. My 2x6 has a 1.25" feed valve on it as well and it never comes close to being wide open.

All I have is 3/4" valve on my feed tank to evaporator. And it is a 4x12. BUT, the bottom of the tank is at least 2 or maybe 2 1/2 feet above the evaporator. The only time I have to worry is during the last 2 inches in the tank, then theres not much head pressure left.

As long as the tank is high enough and as mark casper said.. Head pressure is important to keep pushing that sap through the pre-heater, 1" is plenty big enough

My head tank is 4 ft above and use 3/4 copper and have no problem.

Bud,

I have a 2x8 Leader drop flue and my preheater is 3/4" and I reduce the feed line from 1.5" to 3/4" going into the preheater and coming out of the preheater, I take it from 3/4 back up to 1.5" before it goes into the evaporator. At peak boiling times, I am probably boiling off around 70 gph without any problems with flow and the bottom of my tank is probably only 18" above the preheater entrance.

my 3x8 has a 3/4" supply, about 10' long and the supply tank is 8" higher than the float valve. Never had a problem, even when boiling at 75 gph rate. Float valve still never opens very far to maintain level. Same true if I make a large draw which happens seldom but it does happen.
