Theron,
You get an early run and can't keep up, how will you get those other 200 on line?

PATheron

Ill get them on the freeze days Doug. I dont even have all my wood done. Duke and I are on a mission from God to drill as many holes in maple trees as possable. Well get them Im confident. Theron

Theron...very surprised they are not running...I had -7 on the way to work. You were probably colder than that.

I think we were about the same. Dukes still trying to get the feeling back in his extremities. I told him like Parker says, YOU GOTTA WANNNNN IT! Lazy mutt. Theron

Keep up the pace. At 2 holes a day you are looking at 66 months of solid drilling.

You may have to increase the hole/day ratio to get there before season. I may have to bail you out and help so we can get 4 holes/day and cut that to 33 months.

Ten(10) below here this morning. If we got a warm spell tomorrow it would take two weeks to thaw out the trees!!

Well you don't have to worry about those holes drying up.

We are still a long ways from tapping here in Central Maine. Some areas were reporting 33 below right near here. 25 below at my house.

It was -22 here this morning. Rather warm compared to the -34 that some of you had.

Theron only 2 taps! Come on now sugaring season is only about 4 weeks away. Kick that dog in the *** and get those taps in.

Theron,

Maybe you should turn the vacuum on. That ought to get her running at -10. Or you could try decaf. LOL

Wishful thinking though. Can't wait for big sap:)

Revi; are the boys up in neck of the woods taping yet? I know that hey start some time after the new year. With 100,000 taps it takes a while.

PA, if you teach Duke to use the drill you can increase your tap count per day.

I don't believe that PMA is going to help Theron any this time. With this cold snap and very deep freeze, it might be this time next month or later before he gets any sap as not much warmup in sight.

Hey Theron I am on board with you, We are a little warmer down here. We never got below zero, tonight right now it is 2 degrees.

The forecast for me looks like Friday next week to be the next day above freezing. I do have to agree that with this cold sap it will take a while to thaw those poor trees.

So for me come next thursday I will be starting to watch the temps more closely. Still shotting for the end on Jan as Go-Time for me.

Batteries for drill are charging as I type.

Dennis- Your all ready for the BIGSAP? You guys warm up a little quicker than us. Ive still got a lot to do but Im gaining. I still have hooking up to do at the sugarhouse and across the road. Im watching the weather becouse I think it will take 4 full days just to drill holes and Im trying not to take vacation as much this year. Was going to be out working in the woods this morning but 10 below here. Dukes putting his paws down on this one. He says enough already. Mangy mutt is sleeping on my sleeping bag right now. Says 10 below is bull%#@$! Hard to get good help. Theeeron

Theron my dog didn't want to go out this morning either. Being a short haired dog it doesn't take him long to get cold at -8. He isn't much help anyway. I bought a new 18v drill off of the Snap On man and can't wait to try it out on maple trees.

Russ,
Careful on your enthusiasm to ty the new drill, Theron will be encouraging you to break it in in Pa before you are ready to start up North.

Russ- We just want sugaring season, huh? Cant hate a guy for that. Ill tell you what I can allready smell the air and see the releaser dumping. You guys are going to see some cool footage this year. My releasers should be pretty spectacular to watch. Might not be catastophic sap like Matts but should be pretty close. If I go get the other 200 taps I want and put them on the double were going to see if the Canadians were kidding around about the 3000 tap deal. No regulation this year. Last year I had to run the regulator to keep the pump from cavatating. This year its getting cranked clear down. Unregulated BIGSAP coming to the shed. Theeeron

Trying a test tap on thursday, figure out when to tap from that. What happens if you tap too early?

PATheron
01-21-2009, 05:27 AM
Tapping time is hard to figure. If you tap to early they will peter out when it get real good later on. Down here most people figure second weekend of Feb. If you run vac and use new spiles every year you can tap real early. Tough call. If your not sure watch the seasoned sugarmakers in your area and ask them when they are tapping. Thats a good way. jmbinventions...are you in willow grove PA? If so I would think about tapping now, your season will be probably be three weeks earlier than us in northern PA. Probably end a lot sooner too. You should be in the 40's down there a few days this week yes?

Russell Lampron
01-21-2009, 12:59 PM
Keep an eye on the full moon. That is usually the coldest time of the month and for you February tappers anytime after that should be go time.
