How is everyone doing for deer season? Pa's rifle season opened Monday, I scored a 7 pointer (small 14 inch spread) by 7:30am. Big deer, weighed almost 190lbs dressed. Right spot right time. Only saw 3 more deer the whole day and none on Tuesday. Back to work today but still have some time to fill the doe tags.

I have missed 2 so far, but my middle son, who just was able to hunt in NY this year, shot his 1st deer on the 2nd shot. The first shot he was nervous and shaking but the second shot was perfect. It went thru both lungs and ran about 30 yards and dropped. I found it was more exciting that my son got his first deer then all of the deer I have ever shot. Kids are growing up fast and I am enjoying every minute of it, other than the teenager deals ever so often. But thats life.

Around here in the summerI wish I could hunt with a gatling gun, . hunting season comes around and no deer. = this is what I do . all hunting clothes outside all the time. Hunt with the wind and pick a watch accordingly. If a buck winds you you are done or lucky. And this works for me 2 steps and stop for 2- 3 minutes I have been doing this for several nights and seen buck each night. Tonight An (8) only on land I dont have permission to hunt he had to go 235 yards and he was mine . Funny thing was I had the o6 rested in the crotch of a tree and I had to wait for a doe 15 feet in front of me to lower her head so I could look at the buck. Wind made all the differance they are out there you just have to take your time and put in the time - MY 2 Cents SS -

I had a big problem this year hunting and I figured out you can't kill anything when you have both hands around you own neck all season. Oh well, one of those years. We are day # 27 in a row of below average temps and aprox 11 days of measureable snow fall so far. Lot of wind, blowing snow, cold temps, rain and wind, etc nearly the entire month of Nov. Most difficult Nov to hunt I have ever seen and a lot of days of 20 to 25 degrees below average temps and a lot of acorns, well you get the picture, the deer didn't move.

Oh, by the way, remember when you shoot a bow at a deer that comes in behind your right shoulder in a climbing treestand 31' off the ground and the big buck is a whole 7 yards from the base of your tree, your cam on your bow can hit the treestand when you go to shoot and cause you to completely miss a big buck. Killed the big one last year at 48 yards with a bow and I can't kill one at 7 yards this year. Kinda the way the entire season went, but oh well, maybe next year if God allows me another year to hunt.

As far as the 11 days of snow, we don't usually have maybe 1 day of measureable snowfall by now. Looks like it is going to be a longggggggggg winter.

My 10 year old son 1 st year hunting. He has seen 9 deer finally took a shot and he got a 8 pointer 165 Lbs. Last day of firearm season. Buck was standing 27 yards away and after looking at his shot the bullet went through the middle of a small hemlock tree before it hit the deer. This is as good as it gets.
Not bad, 1st year, 1 shot, 8 pointer, sapwood, & venison.

Great to see young ones introduced to the outdoors. One of the best things you can teach kids and what guns are intended to be used for, not to shoot at humans as the TV and video games teach.

I had the unfortunate experience of shooting a doe about 30 feet from me, keel over then get up. I tried to pull the bolt back on my rifle but it jammed up. The deer staggered off and by the time I got the gun unjammed it was gone. I tracked it for over 4 hrs. Never did find her. Come to find out there was one 30-06 shell in my 30-40 krag bullets. This was my first shot at a deer. I know I hit her broad side. A friend at work is convinced that the "military" gun I was useing went right through and made a clean hole, easy to heal up. I went back the next day and a couple of times since, but no signs of anything. I felt real bad wounding it like that. I was also dreaming of vension burgers....next year for sure.

Phone was ringing at 6:30 am. "Bring the tractor super sappy". Piled em up like cord wood this afternoon. I never pulled a trigger. Just gathered deer for the day. Windy and cold . A friend of mine took a pretty good fall down a steep ravine , he is getting up there in age , He landed in a small creek then carried the guns wile I skidded his deer. He went home , I hope he is ok. My buddy Murph did the same move that gearpump did. Knocked her down then the gun wouldnt fire again = wrong bullets . Murph Said he hit the doe with a broken branch and that didnt work so he gave her an atomic knee drop then went for the throat.(murph has never been right in the head) All doe permits got filled today(8)and when I was leaving the farm I had to see at least 30 deer out feeding before dark. Still too many deer as far as I am concerned. -SS

Plan to hunt whitetails three days next week, and then back at it after Christmas during PA flintlock season too. Should finish just about time to start hanging tubing!

Ah the smell of jerking drying on a open dehydrator. ( sung to some chestnut over open fire tune or something???)

130 lb. doe, ten minutes of pitch black on the second day of NH muzzleloader season. The next Saturday, my 8 yr. old daughter called in a nice 150?? lb. 6 pointer and developed that fever that makes some grown men quiver. It was great fun though, she called it in and "allowed" it to walk away!

Yesterday was the conclusion of the PA rifle season. After 2 months of hunting, I am done. I only ever saw 1 legal buck (4 points on one side) during all my hunting. My cousin and I went to my camp for the last day. There's a real honey hole about a mile from the camps. We both shot doe's and he shot an 11 point. A decent rack at 161/2" inside.

It was an awesome day! Now I can get ready for Maple:)

Thanks. The colour of the rack is fairly typical. They seem to prefer rubbing hemlocks so the sap the colours it darker than if they rubbed softwoods or hardwoods.

More than ever! My wife and I regularly see 5 to 15 grazing in the soybean field next to our garden. The bucks are tearing up the small maples with their rubbing. Maples that todays toddlers will be tapping! They eat everything around here (including young maples) and are regarded as 4 legged vermin.

i tapped the side of a 4" beach with my .243 in 05 it went through the side left a nice furrow and split into 3 pieces, 2 went through both lungs, the other lodged in his heart i ended up with my first deer on youth weekend a 7pt 153lb dressed out, i was a happy lil guy my brother shot my deer this year, i was on the wrong side of the truck:( WE WERE LEGAL 15FT off the CLASS 4 road) i was mad cause he already shot one on youth weekend and i was to old to go this year. Im thinking of putting my 05 buck mount in the sugar house during the sugaring season. will the steam affect it??

Just finished tanning the hide from my doe this year. It will go to Mike (grandson) for his room.Turned out real nice but could be just a little softer. Probably need to dampen and work it more.
Hunted whitetails for a half hour at dusk tonight. but it was to crunchy out to move much.

Butcher,
We will be done with Flintlock this Sat. So I am trying to get some time in the woods. I really don't need another deer this season but I do like to hunt and the smoke pole is a challenge in its self.

That is a very nice buck! I haven't shot at a legal buck since the antler restrictions (4 on one side ) came out!
