Pruning??

I think a maple that grows back in the woods with a long tall trunk and a few heavy stems up high is a tougher tree than one that grows out in a field that has all little growth that starts down low. (Do you know the type of tree I am talking about?) It appears that in time many of those little branches that grow straight up begin to die off. I've seen a lot of these trees stone dead on people lawns.

Which brings me to my question: How should you prune a maple for long term health? Particularly the ones out in the open.
