On Friday night I phoned 3 local producers and got an average price of $22 a liter so at maple fest here in Millbrook today I cleared out all 50 liters at $20 a liter.

But I have one question what are your retail prices at?

Our retail for this year has been:
4L - $57
2L - $30
1L - $17
500mL - $10

I always thought we were on the high side but looks like we've fallen behind!

I did the math on our regular pint price at home ($15 USD) then factored in our shipping, and I'm going to be charging $18 CDN for for a US quart (947ml I think) and $10 cdn for the 473 ml (us pint) out here in BC...and I'm still $2 cdn less than the local grocery store on the pints...

Any more word on the quebec crop this year? Haven't heard anything on the CBC...

Couldn't have ben much better than ours in Eastern Ontario. Started late (first boil on March 29) and ended on Wed April 16. We had a terrible time tapping with all the snow. Some of our lines are now 8' in the air and there's still snow in the bush! The last 4 days have been above 20 Celcius in all of eastern Canada so I can't see anyone still making syrup now. Half our taps were on brand new tubing and we still only made 0.73L per tap. Others in our area were about the same. At least bulk prices are up!

I'm almost embarrased to say, but down here in poor Haldimand County I'm running at:

4L white plastic: $48
2L white plastic: $25
1L white plastic: $13
500ml Kent glass: $9
250ml Kent glass: $6

The biggest producer in Haldimand is also $48/4L. They made 3300L (726.9 IMP Gals.) (873 US Gals.) from 2700 taps, so that's 1.22L per tap. They've got a way better running bush than I do and 25lbs vaccuum to boot.

I've heard that areas of southern Ontario are waaaay lower than the Toronto area and the east. I have no problem at all selling in Toronto at the prices I quoted and our syrup is the same price as most other producers in the Ottawa Valley. With bulk prices nearing $30 per gallon I'd rather sell it in a drum than retail for only slightly more than bulk price once labour to fill and container prices are factored in.

Our plastic jugs to buy are cheap. The maple suppliers are rippin us off. They want at least double the price. We get the 4L heavy, tall jugs for $.65, 2L for $.48 and the 1L is $.39.

My uncle bought some 1L hard plastic with the nice scene on them. $2 a piece!

They're a vegetable container store. The guy buys a tractor trailer load of all different stuff and stores them in the trailers. Miles Containers are their name. They're out of Waterford. 519-443-7107.

My cousin told us about them. He makes apple cider.

Do any of you get Atkinson's monthly e-newsletter? The one that came this morning quoted some prices that they researched in Simcoe County. They were:

4L $61.95
2L $36.95
1L $23.95
500mL $12.95
250mL $7.95

Thoughts? We'll be manning our booth at the Perth Festival of the Maples this weekend and it'll be interesting to note what prices the other producers have this season.
