ABS Pipe

Does anyone know if ABS black pipe can be used for piping from storage tanks to the preheater? I'm concerned that it's not for potable water but can't find any infomation one way or another. I find 1 1/2" poly pipe so hard to work with.

Why not use PVC Schedule 40 Pressure pipe? Thats used for potable water.

Never seen ABS used for potable water.

As benchmark said, I mostly use schedule 40 pvc as it is what potable

PVC pipe isn't commonly used in Canada, except for the thinwall septic pipe. I can get the schedule 40 PVC pipe from a maple supply dealer, but it's not normally a stock item. Where as the ABS pipe is available at every Hardware store across the country.

I may have to try and fight with the 1 1/2" poly.

What about fiber reinforced clear plastic tubing? It's much easier to handle and I think it's food grade.

There may be a thinner walled polyethylene available that is easier to use. Check what the pressure rating is on the pipe. Higher pressure ratings for the pipe equal an increased wall thickness and make it harder to work with. If you are inserting barbed fittings use a torch to heat the pipe a little before inserting the fitting, it will go in alot easier, same for taking them apart.
