i was able to get some 5 gal pickle buckets and soup broth buckets this year and have been using them to collect sap off my gravity lines, then put the sap into a 55gal drum which previously had syrup in it. i got it used from bascom. yesterday we went to boil and when i opened the top of my drum it smelled like pickles, we only used about 10 gals or so of that sap. the pickle buckets were washed in a sanitizer solution, but they still smelled b4 use even after soaking for 1.5 days in sanitizer. what gives? is that sap safe to boil? also will it make the syrup taste funny? any help would be great

Usually it doesn't. I used pickle pails for sap collection for years and the inside of the sugarhouse always smelled like garlic but there was never any taste in the syrup.

If it does affect it the you got the worlds first dill pickle syrup.
