I just got in from testing the sugar content from the sap of 4 trees combined together and the sugar content was 5%. So I double-checked it and I made sure it was at 38F and that the hydrometer was clean and measured it again and it was 5%. So I was wondering if any one else has had this high of sugar in there sap?

I was just going to post a thread with this same title.

I checked the surgar content of the sap that ran today and it was only %2.:(

I thought that early sap had higher content.

17.2 gallons to make one of syrup @ 5%. I think this is right or real close

TapME that is not bad there is not as much work to boil it down.:) :)

Fred these tree's are in a wet are on top of a the hill that our house sits on so there is a lot of water and these tree's have huge crown's.
And I checked the sugar content from are tree in the bus and it at %3.5 with a medium size crown.

I've had sap as high as 4% in the past mainly from road trees. The content usually drops pretty quick. So far this season I've had 1 1/2 % from woods trees but just tapped a bunch of road trees and waiting to see what they are.

Somebody asked about the Rule of 86. Here it is: Divide 86 by the sugar content of your sap, e.g., 2%, and it will tell you the number of gallons you need to boil down to get a gallon of syrup. At 2% you need 43 gallons of sap.

Hang on to those trees, they will help you make a lot of syrup quicker.

I took a cake of ice out of one if my buckets put it in a pan in the house and when it melted I stured it up and checked it ,1% on the button. 86 gallons to 1 gallon syrup. Man that is a lot of cooken. Pitch the ice My trees are running 2-3%

At 5% sugar, that qualifies as a "Sweet Tree"!  I would consider taking some cuttings from them and getting some youngsters going!  That is how Cornell has been doing it.Tim

those are some special trees, treat them good! This is the first year i've had a sap hydrometer, but I have been an embarrasing 2 and below. It is mostly reds but the past few years I have always been right about 40:1. this 1.5 garbage almost seems like a waste of wood.

Back in late January the first silver maples I tapped measured about 1.6 or 1.7 but then a couple of days ago I boiled a bunch and made syrup a lot faster than I expected. So I measured another load of sap last night and it was at 2.5!

I added a bunch of new taps a couple of weeks ago so I'm not sure if It's just different trees or a fluctuation from the season progressing, but is sure is nice to go from 54:1 to 34:1

At this rate I'll triple last year's output!

The sap i boiled last weekend was just below %3 .
