OOHHHH MMMMYYYYY,,,,,,I went over to Rte.11 yesterday afternoon, strapped on the snow shoes and took a hike,,,the snow is up to most of the mainlines and a lot of the lateral lines,,,I dug some of the lines out of the snow,,,,was about 3' deep,,,deeper in spots,,,,I know it is deeper in Hill,,,,I will do the littel I can to get ready with this deep snow but here I would like to see it settel a littel befor I do too much more in the woods,,,will start getting the sugarhouse ready next,,snows not to deep inside,,,,

Parker did you find the 12pack on the top at RT. 11?

Parker,

Good news, 6' more coming Friday night. I'm planning to tap 1 location Sunday and start playing around with the vacuum.

Parker
02-21-2008, 06:34 PM
Matt- I have not put one out there for this year yet,,,,,just a littel too cold,(nothing more dicouraging than a frozen can after a long-tough hike),pretty much wait till we are tapping,,,might go with a 30pack this year,,,real encouragment to check for leaks,,,,

Mark- 6'!!!!! That would really slow me down,,,,,,,,,

Thinking I might just get started on hoit road and putney hill late next week (southern exposure),,,,but it really depends on the weather,,,not too much sugaring weather on the 15 day forcast,,,,,but I still have PLENTY to do to get ready,,,,

Now I have to figure how to get the 8N up from the sugarhouse,,got it stuck down there last storm (wet heavy snow-slush),,I left it down there overnight thinking I might be able to drive it up over the frozen tracks (yeah-right) the next morning,,,,,,,,next morning snow had slid off the sugarhouse roof a lot further than normal,,filling the road the tractor is at the end of (70 feet long) with 2-3 feet of snow which froze hard as concrete,,,, YEAH! I thought I would be bringing my skidder back to town this weekend and plow the homestead out,,,but looks like I might stay logging where I am for another week,,,,I have a buddy with a kaboto with serious tire chains on the other side of town,,,,might move him over for a day,,,,,,,,,

Mark-NH

Parker,

I discovered after a few years of trying that the old Ford's are a summer tractor. Between the 6 volt system, 2 wheel drive and lack of weight on the rear end it is just not worth the fight.

Ops, meant 6" not 6'. Now that would be discouraging. I'm tapping Sunday as I only have 1 day off after that for the next 2 weeks. Better to have them in the trees and frozen than the other way around.

If I'm picking up on it right; you put a few boiling sodas at the top of your lines to encourage and reward you for checking for leaks. BRILLIANT.

Parker

I have my logging job in Warner done and am moving my skidder home to plow out(pull the 8n over the hill) mon-tues.,,then to Rte.11 for a couple of day of logging-plowing there.
Plan on trying to have Hoit Road and Putney Hill Road bushes tapped by end of week,(600?total),Went to Hoit road yesterday afternoon and shoveled out the tank (3+feet of snow and about6"of ice on tank cover) was very suprised that the cover on the tank did not colapse under the weight,,,once tank was shoveled out strapped on the snowshoes and grabbed my square pointed long handeled shovel (long handeled 490D) and struck off,,,,,Walked the entrie system and dug most of it out,,,found one maple top (big) over a lateral mainline and 3 lateral lines, enterances,,,shoveled on that one spot for over an hour,,,have it 1/2 dug out now,,gonna grab my small saw this morning and try to get the rest dug out-cut up-back in place,,then start on Putney Hill if I have time,,,,
Heading over to Bobs at 9am to try to finish installing boosters,,then his install will be complete (Vacuum system on a budget)
Mark- yes,,I like to have a littel extra encouragement to check for leaks smoetimes,,,

It's a shame Al Gore couldn't have moved up there for the winter, bet he wouldn't have been talking to much about global warming! LOL

Parker--it's great to see you back at it this year. Would have hated to see you had to hang it up.

Parker
02-25-2008, 07:06 AM
Got Bobs conductor line and boosters finished yesterday,,,,that is a nice looking system,,,,downhill-tight and straight,,,,,,
Moving skidder home this A.M. to plow out then moving it to RTE.11 for a few days,,,need to figure out how to open up the tank on the highway,,,there is a 12 foot tall wall of snow all the way out to the whiteline of the road there,,,,,not sure if I can do it with the skidder,,,,time will tell

Hey Matt,
Is the governor going to use that 20-30 gallons of kero this spring to boil with or has he just thrown in the towel!!!
Saw him on Unity Rd. on day a while back and haven't seen him since.

I talked to him the other night. He's gonna go for it. Might only do 1000 this year he said, what ever is closest to the sugarhouse. Last he mentioned he was just going to use his new 2x6 and ro the sap. Not fire up his big rig.

Mark-NH
02-25-2008, 09:36 AM
We tapped out one bush yesterday, 225 taps. Most of the day was spent extending the main line 500' out of a hollow and to a more accessible location for sap pick up. Towards the end of last season it was more like mud bogging than sugaring every time we had to collect. I still haven't found a mudflap I left in there somewhere.

Also got the vacuum system I got from Parker up and running. South facing trees were moist but could not claim they were running. Vacuum was pulling 25" at the releaser but the lines were frozen beyond 1/3 of the way into the bush.

1 more bush to tap next weekend and then hang the buckets. I still haven't had a chance to bucket out the sugar house.

Did some plowing this afternoon (6hours),,,might have it done tommrow????,,,,,Then off to rte.11,,,start in ernest,,,,,It got up to 47 at my house,,,but only for a few hours,,, gonna get after it here,,,but I am telling you,,snow is ddeeeeeep

Mark,,that pump and releaser will pull 22" all season with a tight system,,,you will see a big diffrance in sap,

WESTVIRGINIAMAPLER
02-25-2008, 09:33 PM
I can't see Kevin boiling all season on a 2x6 until he runs the sap to 20% or better. He's so used to a big rig, I can't see him downsizing that much.

sweetwoodmaple
02-25-2008, 09:38 PM
Matt - Did he buy a new 2 x 6 rig, or use my used pans and buy an arch?

royalmaple
02-26-2008, 08:12 AM
Parker-

You've been HIJACKED!!Sorry.

Brandon, he said he was going to just run the 2x6. he bought a nice 2x6 complete at bascoms year or so ago, might have been last year at this time. Oil fired. He was going to rig this up as a finishing rig, similar to like how glen goodrich has his stuff. But last I talked to him, he was just going to RO the sap and run it on the 2x6. At first he was going to have the 2x6 as a finishing rig, then use the 2x6 for small runs, now I think it is ro and 2x6 only.

3% gave him an oil tank last year, and there was only 20 or so gallons of K1 in there, right dave???? Some 100 or so gallons later, we got the tank out. So he's got some fuel for the season already.

Parker, hope the plowing goes good. 6 hours to plow out your yard, that stinks. And just when you thought it was over, here comes the next storm tonight.

Mark-NH
02-26-2008, 04:10 PM
I just looked at the long range forecast. They are not calling for anything above freezing for the next 15 days. Rest up boys! If this holds true there will be no sleep for any of us the second half of the month.

Isn't this similar to what happened last year? My seasons are running into one another the older I get. I think we waited around most of the month and then got hit with a couple good runs towards the end and even into April a little.

Mark,
Looked at my boiling calendar yesterday and we usually start boiling anytime around the 8th to the 11th of March right into the middle of April.
Ahh we're still good!
It's only for 6 weeks and at about the 4th week we are all saying the same thing " I wish this sh@* would stop running, I can't get ahead!!"

Matt,
Maybe you should be seen and not heard!!
Respect your elders!!!!
HA ..... HA
Now, if I tell you what my evaporation rate with this EEU is, are you going to add say 500% more???
The snow wasn't to bad around here!
Got my lines all washed out yesterday.
Got the sap filter piped in over the tank in the sugarhouse.
Thursday night is going to be good ......... 10 below around here, that should bind um right back up!!!!!
Going to try to tap out Sunday!
We'll see.

Dave

The EEU is in the final stage, it's all together, just needs to have a cover built at one end.
That was a neat project to help work on.
The guy is building me a filter/canner also.
I should be around Saturday (getting things ready).
Sunday morning I'll be around, planning on tappingin the afternoon.
Send me a PM on Friday to let me know what your schedule is for the weekend.

Guys- Glad to see you guys are getting ready for go time. I think with all the snowpack you should have a real good season. Just got in from the sugarhouse. Been visiting with the neighbor. Took me very little time to boil my sap tonight. Took off 12 gallons. Should almost fill my second drum. Yesterday my dad and I regraded all my mains where they didnt have a lot of pitch. Had troubles with them freezing up. I think they are totally good now. Been adding some taps. Looks like this sunday through wed might be pretty good. Hoping for bigger sap than ever. Having a blast. My dad is in heaven. He loves it. Ro was the best investment of the whole operation. Just keep drawing syrup. Its unreal. First draw tonight was 5 gallons. Pretty amazing for the little evap. I think my lines are good now. The pump humms along at 25 to 26 inches. I think I have all my plumbing figured out so nothing freezes. I think im just about ready now if we get a big run maybe I wont have to struggle. Im finetuning as Im learning how things work. Havent had a lot of time to get on the trader becouse everyday Im trying to correct things that I find I need to improve. Kind of trying to just keep my head above water. Hope things start happening for you guys up north. Theron

hey parker, i saw where using filter aid will help with felt filtering in a past post. i thought that was a great idea. might get more thru each filter. i never had good luck with the flat filters. used the cones

Mark-NH
02-28-2008, 10:03 AM
Parker,

I use the flat filter and they work great, but I am only drawing off a gallon at a time. I found it works best to lay 6-7 papers down on top of the synthetic filter. You need to pull the top paper off each time before pouring in the next draw off.

If you get down to only a couple papers and you have more draw offs coming for the night, you will need to add more papers. Always wet the filters in the back pan and wring them out before laying them out top of the screen.

I've had great luck with the same unit as you now have but I run a lot less volume than you.

Good morning all,
Well Parker like you said (WTF) it's COOOOOOOOOOOlD here ....... -16.
Mountainvan had some stuff for me a few post ago in "bottling Equipment" as far as using flat filters and filter aide. I think it was titled "Filter Aide".
Had to warm up the electric meter to get the electricity to flow!!
Looks like temps in the low 40s this week, might just be what we're looking for!
I go today to pick up the EEU, filter / canner and sink.
We're tapping Sunday, so I guess I have my weekend planned.
Tomorrow we'll clean up more snow, get the sink in and plumbed, get the canner all set up.
Monday I'll wash the EEU out and get that set up and going.
Should be good!!
Son's girlfriend is here from Nebraska, never seen this Maple stuff done before, heck she's never seen this much snow before.
I told we are a rugged bunch to in the North!!!
Stay safe guys!!

Got Putney hill pretty much ready to tap,,lots of shoveling,,will be drilling tommrow try for the 2 orchards,,
Then off to Rte.11 repair and drill,,,want to be all in by next sat. (realisticly)

Parker,
You're not alone with the high banks.
We shoveled one place to back the truck into, that took up about an hour of tapping time.
Got about 3/4 the taps in today.
Going to set the EEU up tomorrow, then finish tapping.
Sap was running a bit on the South facing areas, not a lot but a bit.
Would have done more but we started out with one dead battery and one almost full for the 18 volt.
Tis the season.
Stay safe and don't slip!!!

A littel detail on one of the pumps we put together yesterday,,1 is a BB-4 which seems to be a littel bigger than the sp-22 but still a surge piston pump,,,we put Chineese copies(WING DONG) of the Honda 5.5HP moters that we got at Goodriches (cheap) on them,,,,Normally I like a 2 sheave cast steel pulley on the gas moters for these rigs (cast aluminum pulleys always break on easter sunday at the beggining of a huge run when every store in the country is closed) Well yesterday we put the 2 sheave pulley on the bb-4 -wing dong combo,,,,,,pull and pull and pull some more and that moter just would not start-take the belts off and it starts right up belts on-no start,,,(we filled the pump with 30wt non detergent which looked about like gear oil)
While we were getting stuff at Goodriches I asked for pulleys for the moters,,glenn says try this-you will like it,,,it was a pulley with a clutch built in (for a go cart mabey?),,But just 1 sheave,,,well-I wasent going to get it ($40),,,BUT,,,,,good to try new things they tell me....
So we put the clutch pulley on the bb-4wingdonger combo and by god gurt,,the moter fires right up,,,give it some gas and the pump starts rolling over,,,seems to work very well,,,,I am hopeing it will hold up,,,if it does Ill get another 2,,,

03-11-2008, 08:47 AM
Parker in a pinch you can make an idler pully set up too. Have a third pully and a slightly larger belt. Take a rod and have a pin in it so it will pivot and push up or down depending on how you have the pulley set up and it will put the tension on the belt and start driving the pump. Then just need a rope or wire to hold the bar in place at the proper setting for the tension you want.

Got the pump-releaser set up on RTE.11,,started her up and was pulling 7" OHHHHH MY BIGSAP,,,,,,,NOT,,,,,,,We put gauges on all the mainlines above the valves,,,,shut off the valve and see how fast the vacuum drops,,,know about what you have for leaks on that line (VT. mapleschool tech.) Man that works well,,(and saves miles of walking),we got the vac. up to 19",,,was surprised at the # of leaking T's and spiles,,,will go back and change them out soon,,,,,,,,also a lot of leaking saddels,,,,will try to get hoit rd. system and Hill set up-running today,,,might run today,,,,

Try using Darveau saddles; they wrap around the mainline and secure with a screw. As long as you secure the laterals to the mainline (dont pull on saddle) they will not leak

Parker
03-13-2008, 06:11 AM
Might look into that type of saddels
Got the pump deployed on Hoit Road (center of flywheel is out of round from running loose and wont stay tight,,,think I am gonna weld it on) got the releaser set up plugged in and got a whole 4" ,,HAY NOW!!,,,,,,;),,,I guess you know,,,leak patrol,,,,how come I dont see the broken t's and the chewed lines when I am tapping??? Finally got the vac. up to 19" but have to work on the releaser and some connections to hold the vac. that high,,,will maintain 16" (not acceptabel)
Droped off the BB-4 in Hill last night,,,setting that up-installing valves-gauges in mainlines-checking leaks up there today,,,supposed to stay around 36 here agine today,,mabey run tommrow,,,,,,,
Still have 300 or so to tap once we get vacuum ship shape.

It was a late starting run which did not last long,,but it was a start,,,very good to see sap comming into a releaser like that,,I would guess we got less than 250 gallons total,,would also guess in all the tanks there is 400 gallons total,(I like to have at least 800 gallons on hand to light the fire),,should do something today,,,I wont start boiling (if it runs today) till tommrow night (I dont like starting things on fridays)
Girls and I went back up to Hill,,Ray had the vac. back up to 20",,,very excited about that,,,,we definatly have some work to do today fine tuning vac. levels at RTE.11 and Hoit rd,,,,,Ray said snow was still over most of the lines in porqupine hollow-will leave that alone (valve at booster shut off) till snow has setteled more,,,still 4 feet of snow in Hill and almost that everywhere elas around here,,,snow not yet melted away from trees...
Gonna put evaporator together this AM the go vacuum leak hunting,,,,,,
After wacthing my vacuum pumps running yesterday (surge piston type) I can see the attraction to liquid ring pumps,,,,#1=higher vac. levels #2=no oil smog, consumption #3=one moving part,,,,,,,,I am going to keep my eye out and think about how to set these up without elec.,,,,,,,saw in the indeania video the fellow had a gas powerd unit,,,

Parker it was nice to see you again Saturday. It was fun working in Kevins woods and even more fun to see Mighty Marvin in action. I think Marvin might like a cupola over his head. If you could get the steam out of the sugar house he could breathe better and maybe increase his evap rate. It is quite a sight to see the steam pouring out of your steam stacks.

Parker - glad to hear your up, running and got that vacuum up. That pic of you in the sugarhouse is a true keeper. I've got to tell you, I absolutely love that filter you threw in with the evaporator. I'm only using 2 out of the 4 filter holders. I don't know why it works so well, but far better then any cone filter system I've ever used. Though I would need all 4 filter racks, but getting all my syrup through on two.

storm still going high winds, very cold wind chills. think you were on mt. washington here.changed front pans yesterday, sap was gelling faster than i could get out of pan. grade holding at fancy and light med. made over 600. see no sap here till tuesday. seen no sap since wed. scott wheeler went to maine to see what is going on at new woods. since froze up. check woods for damage later. now i have leaks. dry line froze at releaser. my new releaser leaks on one side you can see the frost on one slide, meaning it is leaking air there. lots of fun ahead

Jeff sounds like you have your work cut out for you,,,what do you mean by syrup "gelling" in syrup pan?
After about 18 deg. yesterday AM warmed up a littel here yesterday around 1pm,,started the pumps,,got about 200 gal on hoit road (south face) 150 gal on rte.11 and 100 (cold) in Hill,,,
Had only 16" on rte.11,,,isolated the leak on the releaser valves to the uphill conductor line,,,went up that line turning off lateral main lines,,found leaking main,,,walked out it and found a lateral line off a saddel,,,took about 5 mins.,,,,without those valves could have been hours and hours,,,,,was walking right on top of 3-4 feet of hardfrozen snow,,,good trucking out in the woods when it is this cold,,,,looks like the snow is starting to melt away from the trees a littel
Young Ray got the 2 ton pretty well set up,,will put finishing touches on it monday,,looking forward to haulung 1400 gal per trip,,

so cold here that the "gelling" in the pan was like fuel oil. with out heating to change pans. got that done. got some sap yesterday from 1 to 7 600 gallons or so. my dry line on main releaser froze again,i am going to change the 11/2 quik connect see if that is problem. took forever to thaw one line i knew froze found the leak. my east taps are running great. spent most of yesterday tapping spouts back in that the frost has pushed out. going to go over them all this week. found more than a few.my lower releaser is a double, i have had nothing but freeze problems with that. one side fills and freezes solid. i had to take it apart to get to the ice block yesterday. took 2 hours to get that system going.going to put a heat tape around that. that was too much work. drained my liquid ring, running 75 right now for short runs. was holding 22 inches on that little pump. so that system is tight.working on an antifreeze loop for that. going to use r/v antifreeze since it is 3 dollars a gallon.i figure 50 gallons should do the trick, going to stick a loop in the brook to cool it.have yet to get my main liquid ring running, may be this week. i have not finished tapping 100 to go some day. easter today not much time to do what i want to do.hate holidays!! in my spare time i am building a pan washer for my front pan. a 4x6 piece of plywood, and radiant flooring pipe looped to it. with holes drilled into the pipe to blast hot water from steamaway on to the pan to clean it. well back to the fun.

getting sap only out of east faceing woods. got a lot yesterday. but no where else. put heat tapes around my releasers. had a single froze to the top yesterday. had a time getting the ice out of that. hope not to have that problem now. one thing i learned last nite is to drain them after the freeze , so as pump still running will not turn it into a block of ice, as has been happening

gmcooper

Maplecrest,
Have you tried the heat tape before? Let me know if it works. I plugged my releaser again last night with Ice. 4th time this year. It was only 29 when I went to shut it down but was full of ice already. Sure doesn't take long to freeze up. If heat tpae works I'll give it a try.

Hill had thawed out upon my return,,,fixed a few leaks and got the system back to 22",,releaser was not freezing inside so left the pump running,,,check rte.11 on way home,,releaser was freezing inside badly and bearley running (seemed colder there) but left it running,,went to hoit road,,releaser was frozen (leak on the slides-sucking some air right into the line going to the pump) as I took the vac. line off the releaser I broke a fitting on the balance tank :),,,off to lowes at 8pm,,,went by rte.11 on way back,,that was solid,,shut it off,,off now to break some more stuff-burn more gas
I have noticed a few thing about higher vac. levels (over 20") #1 if you have a leak somewhere and the temp is around freezing,,the line will freeze (not the case at 16")
#2 the higher vac. you pull the more leaks you find

I know its parkers operation and he needs full production, but....

Shut off the vacuum, speed swap out the guages and see if you get the same reading...

The hunt continues...stay tuned to our next episode where yours truely, blunder bunny will take on a bearded wambat in a mud wrestling competition.

Matt???? I am sure I read that wrong,,,I almost thought you said "Shut off the vaaa...",,,,,I cant even type that,,,,,ITS THE SEASON,,,the vac. pulls until its frozen,,,,Period
Kevin I thought the 2 gauges on the boosters were reading less than the 2 at the end,,,,have to look at it agine
Jeff- I am glad to hear it is busting loose for you..I am looking forward to that,,I think the rain we got today might help things along,,,
Wound up with 36 gallons (thought it would be around 25) am surprised,,love the higher sugar content and a big gas finisher!
GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!!!!!!!

You didn't go all of the way to the end Governor? That is where the 12 pack of boiling sodas is.

Sounds like a vacuum gauge problem to me. 23" out in the woods is good.

could it just be s--t that has built up in the gauges?

Parker,

If the sand is heavy, I switch sides every 3 hours or so in mid boil. It takes about 30 to 60 seconds for me, might take a touch longer for you. I do the opposite of Jeff. I used to do it the way he did it, but I plug off both sides of front pan as it is a drop flue, not neccessary with a raised flue and I draw off 1.5 to 2 gallons off of the light side and dump it into heavy side. I like this better as it sucks the heavy syrup towards the new drawoff side and by dumping in the low sugar sap, it pushes it even more.

You would need to drawoff more than 1.5 to 2 gallons, but same principle. Too much nitre building in the drawoff will darken the syrup, thus another good reason to switch.

I hope I have enough sap to try switching the sides soon,Thanks for all the suggestions,,might be today? 29 deg. now,,,supposed to be 40-50 today,,,,would like to see a 2 gallon-tap run,,,,,was in the woods alot yesterday afternoon,,,couldent find a leak anywhere,,,,,snow definatly pulling away from the base of the trees,,,snowpack down to 18"-2' after the rain the other day,,,,,

We're starting to see more rocks and stumps now too but still managed to get the tractor stuck yesterday. I am hoping for some colder temps at night to keep things flowing over here. Good luck Parker I hope that you get the BIGSAP that you want.

Got another question,,,how does everyone do continuious filtering with a press,,,I have always taken off a littel light on the evaporator (or tried to) and then finished in a finisher,,filtered all the syrup at once,,,I would like to take off the evaporator at density and run thru the press into a drum,,,save lots of steps-cleaning-changing papers,,,,,I am quite sure this wes fab 7"long bank would press like 80 gallons to a set of papers this year,,,,,
Do you charge the press with DE and water then just keep filtering as you draw? or do you put some DE in the press and add a littel to each draw? I dont want a bunch of DE in my barrell......
Thanks Parker

Parker,
I Finish On The Rig And Run Right Through The Filter Press. Once My Draw Is Done, I Check For Density And Send It Through And Into The Barrel. I Gave Up On Using A Finishing Rig Ages Ago, As You Tend To Cook More Grade Out Of The Syrup. The Plus Side Is That You Aren't Handling Your Syrup Again And It's 1 Less Thing You Need To Keep Track Of While You're Boiling.

Parker

Mapleworks- So how do you charge the press? Whats the tech?
I collected about 1600 gallons of 2% sap today.still cant find a leak in the vacuum woods,,,,,,,pumps will run all night....will start boiling around 10 tommrow,,,,I am praying it runs tommrow,,,,want to make 60 gallons in a day,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,YOU GOTTA HAVE A DREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!

Parker, I Just Put 4 Cups Of DE Into The Syrup And Recirculate It Back Into My Drawoff Tank For A Few Minutes And Then Into The Barrel. Hope All Is Going Well There ---We Made 115 Gallons This Past Weekend.

Parker,

Looks like we are on the home stretch and almost to the finish line about 20 miles west of you. It really hasn't run since Thursday last week. There is still some snow in the woods but the forecast for later this week is really warm. I'll keep the pumps on thru Wednesday as it is supposed to drop into the 20's the next coulpe night but I can't see getting much sap after Wednesday.

We are at 91 gallons bottled with maybe another 5 in the canner. Limping, stumbling and tripping our way to 100. I know you run colder over there so I hope it really lets lose for you this week. Keep us posted.

Tried to send you a PM about it but can't make one go through.

Just thinking because I need to come by and pick up that pump. By the way I love the other one I found used this year so I am looking forward to finishing the conversions!

Have fun!

Hey Parker,
How much is Bruce paying for the "Quality Stuff"? Is it worth the drive over to pick up supplies etc? I have never visited them so might be worth the trip just on that account.
