I was talking with a pretty clever fellow in our shop the other day and the topic somehow came around to critters eating the plastic on gasoline containers at our cottage.

He said there is a salt content in the plastic and they want it so bad they hold their nose, so to speak, and chew up the jerry can.

So early this frigid morning it occurred to me that for you folks that have critters chewing up pipelines and sap saks, that if you threw around a couple of handfuls of rock salt, the problem might go away. We don't have tubing (yet) so I can't test that, but we will be hanging our first sap saks in a week or two.

Maybe ?????

That might be a good Idea. Give them what they want in a more easily aquired way, rather than trying to eliminate the problem or the salt from our lines.

Or you wind up with squirells and deer coming from miles around to feast in your bush. Yikes!

It's an idea but i don't know how god of a one , those thing appear out of mid air , in a matter of days you would need to morgage the house to buy the salt good luck with your experment

Yup could be like putting the wasp trap beside your front door.

I don't expect I'll be able to validate the theory. Too much road salt around here. When we moved to this property we got a mineral lick for the deer.
Never saw one touch it. The Department of Highways had us trumped.

The problem with salt is the deer love it and tends to make a mess of the lines. We know from past years at a friend of mine bush spent more time fixing than what the salt was worth. 410 works much better.

i agree and blast them ... one summer me and my wife slept in a tent from may till columbus day weekend i shot 87 red squirels that summer and never made a dent in the population .. .410 22 9mm 306 12 ga cannon claymores what ever it takes blast them ... and when your not there trap the little jerks with rat traps and peanut butter ... works every time ... what i found best was i drove down to little italy and hired me 20 of the italian cats .. they came up and in two days u could find a squirrel ...

I found that trying to totally get rid of ground rats is like trying to dig a hole in the lake.

Now the salt might work if you put it up the road a couple of miles.

A squirrel could travel 100 miles or more in a year, so they just keeping coming in from other locations.
