The temperatures have been to cold for sap to flow. We have han an occasional single day in thr high thirties of low forties, but with the temps before that in the teens or below there would be no sap flow Looking at the extended forecast it will likely be 3 weeks+. It's looking like a late start this season.

Dave, I think from my 50+ year experience, that this year is going to be more like years of the past. Frost is now fairly deep in the ground, many nights are in single digit or low double digits with a few negative numbers. Sap won’t run much, even at 40, with short daylight hours, very cold at night and frost deep in the ground. It will drizzle some, but those that are getting excited at the forecast of an occasional warm day are going to be disappointed at the outcome. I think that you are spot on with your thoughts of waiting.

The long term forecast is starting to look a little better, but I'm probably 2 weeks out at this point. I may tap my yard maple to check and see how things are going though.
It does also remind me of earlier years where I wouldn't tap until March and the season ran into April.

I believe it will take several warm days to thaw the trees this year. This morning our low was -3F and yesterday was cold too. In fact most of this last week has been cold and whenever we got above freezing it was like 33 or 34F. Even the blacktop driveway hasn't melten off in several days in spite of some being bright sun. The latest ever for my first boil was March 28, it may be similar this year if mother nature keeps this cold around.
